My goal is to get into the University of Minnesota Twin Cities
Gpa - 3.41
ACT - 27
(High school junior)
I am not sure what information to provide beyond that so please let me know
I am more curious whether there is a chance of me getting accepted or not to general admission. I am going to apply regardless but I would like to know if anyone has insight into whether I have a decent chance or not.
@caleb45 Do you know if your GPA is weighted or unweighted? It seems a little bit on the Low side for the U. Your act though is on par for CLA, CEHD, CFANS, or Design. Might be a stretch for CBS, CSE or CSOM though if you’re thinking engineering, biological sciences, or business. Do you know what you want to major in?
It’s also good idea to have back ups too, UMD is right within your reach if you’re thinking of still being a part of the UMN schools.
Have you taken any good extracurriculars or been a part of your school’s honor society or clubs? They like to see that too. Also, if you are in a more rigorous high school that sends a lot of students that might help with your GPA. Have you taken any difficult classes? IE - honors, AP or IB? Have you done any volunteering? Are you a legacy or have family working there?
There’s lots of other factors that go into play on your application. It’s helpful to identify them and make sure you put it on your app I also recommend writing in the application prompts too (when you get to that point). It helps them get a better idea of who you are and where your right fit is. (I did it for my application because I was on the lower side of CBS admissions for ACT, it helps!)
Last thing, finish junior year strong and apply right away in the fall! You will hear back quicker and know if you get in or not (saves the stress during your senior year). I applied end of September and heard back in 2 weeks.
Oh I should also mention to take a look at the recent admissions decisions post, you can see the people that were accepted or waitlisted and what their stats were. That could also give you a general idea of what to expect.
@Henxnr I have done 600 + hours of community service through Boy Scouts and am an eagle scout. I led a two year Boy Scout project (Required to get eagle) with the city I live in which added up to 450+ hours between all volunteers and two years worth of time. As far as I am concerned being an Eagle Scout is looked at as a strong extracurricular. In terms of “legacy,” my mother and both her parents went to the U of M Twin cities. When it came to classes I took no advanced classes but have taken the minimum they require but have elected to take financial classes (Accounting, Finance, Marketing, etc…). Finally, I retook the Act which is why I waited to respond and got a 32 composite so I am not sure if that changes my odds. My perspective school within the U would be CSOM for something in the business/finance area.
@Caleb45 well first off, congrats on the higher score! After reading your post I think you will have a better shot at CSOM with your higher ACT. Although not having taken advanced classes might push you down the ladder a little in terms of being accepted. However, they will also see that you’re an Eagle Scout and the many hours of service you have done. So definitely let them know. It’s good that you’re taking the business classes though, that will let them know that you’re interested in CSOM. I would just end with finish your junior year strong and if you can, start senior year stronger and send in your first semester transcript if you don’t get accepted right away. Yeah the U’s competitive but you’ve got shot. I definitely recommend doing all the (not-required) essays. Gives them a better idea of who you are as a student and you can highlight yourself.
Last note, do you know if you’re school is competitive or sends a lot of students to the U?
Will you be taking some of the courses they recommend your senior year? You mentioned fulfilling the minimum expectations but hopefully you will be taking math and getting your 3 or 4th year of foreign language in.
You have to apply to a college, then you can be undecided for majors within the college. CSOM is more selective than CFANS or CEHD and doesn’t always take inter-college transfers.
Note: CFANS as a second choice might be good because it has an applied econ major as well as an ag and food business management major where students get jobs at big food- or ag-related companies like Target, General Mills, etc. that are headquartered in MN.
