Chances to UCB and UCLA

grades so far:
freshman year:
I took bio, chinese 1, computer assisted drafting, english 9, geometry and world geography and got As in all of them both semesters.

sophomore year:
I took algebra 2 (honors, but the school said it doesn't get an extra point), chemistry honors, Chinese 3, english 10, engineering tech intro, and world history. I got As on all of them except algebra 2, which i got a B+ on both semesters.

junior year:
I took apbio, Chinese 4 honors, digital photography, english 11 honors, physics, trig/precalc honors, and ap US history. I got all As first semester but one B+ in apbio second semester.

GPA:
weighted (no -'s or +'s and no limit on extra points from ap and honors): 4.346
weighted (8 ap and honors limit): 4.23
unweighted: 3.88

by the way, does berkeley have the 8 ap and honors limit? i have heard from some places that it does and some places that it doesn't.

SATs:
1st time: 1890
2nd time: 1990
3rd time: 2090

SAT IIs:
chemistry: 780
math IIc: 780
bio: 780
US history: 770

AP tests:
APbio: 5
AP US history: 5

EC: varsity badminton and highest level in piano. I was also in speech and debate and robotics, but I didn't really do anything. 140 hours of volunteer work teaching kids math, science and english.

What are my chances of getting into UCB and UCLA?

Assuming in-state: UCB/UCLA: match

Berkeley: slight reach - high match
UCLA: high match - match

You have a strong GPA and SAT scores, but your ECs are somewhat weak. If your essays make you really stand out, then you'd have a better shot.

All UCs have the 8-semester cap.

I just checked the admission scattergrams of my school and their average SAT and GPA for being accepted to UCB is 2220 and 4.26... is that normal?!?!
I know that UCB is a great school, but I had no idea that it was that competitive.

ah, its looking quite grim.

That seems like an awfully high SAT score for Cal. Perhaps the mean is skewed by a few overachievers.

SAT? No. GPA? Yes. What's the sampling size of that?

Many don't realize how competitive it is (to be expected, when there are ~45,000 applicants and only ~4,000 class spots).

Just make sure to write really great essays. =)

kyledavid,

Let's be fair here, though... it's like 4000 spots, but they accept like 10000+ because their yield isn't as high as some of the privates.

There are 380 people listed on the scattergram. There is stuff plastered all over it saying that it is confidential info, so i wont copy it over here, but its pretty intense.

Writing really great essays...easier said than done.

Yes, I'm aware. That's why I said "class spots." They over-admit as most schools do; Berkeley's yield is rather good, at 40-50%.

Imagine if Berkeley or UCLA could have Harvard-like yield. That would make things very interesting.

ACTUALLY:
4.17 GPA
667cr, 692m, 670w for fall 2007

i have a friend who got 1950 on SAT, and about 4.0 GPA ,got in Berkeley last year...
