Chances, Transfer

Hi,

currently at Stonehill College, have a 3.9 GPA after first semester as a bio major in the honors program.

High school GPA: 3.6 unweighted (took all honors course + AP Bio and Psych, got a 5 in both)

SAT:
Math: 650
CR: 650
W: 620

ACT:
E: 20 (ran out of time)
R: 28
M: 26
S: 30
Composite: 26

A few extracurriculars from clubs and a few awards.

How are my chances?

unless you have ridiculously amazing ec's to supplement the academics, id say your chances are slim based on high school stats

i dont really know how impressive a 3.9 GPA at stonehill is, maybe admissions would see this as an upward trend?

based on the stats of the successful transfers to BC I've seen on this board, I'd say your chances aren't that great. But who knows - if you feel BC is the place for you, make a good case for yourself. a 3.9 is great - but since I have never heard of Stonehill College I can't say what your nearly perfect gpa means.

Go Patriots!

Dear bconstant : Your prospects for a transfer are not strong. Your SAT scores are third quartile which is a better story than the ACT scores which are in the bottom quartile (comfortably) of BC's acceptance pool. Two High School AP exams is a good foundation which clearly proved well for your admission into Stonehill however there are applications with many more such exams. Stonehill's middle 50% range on standardized tests is largely below the middle 50% range at Boston College, an indicator that the BC curriculum will be a step up.

The question for you is why do you think you are now receiving 3.9 scores at Stonehill? Easier courses, more focus from you? Honestly, it might pay to remain in your honors curriculum at Stonehill. Good luck with your final decisions.

Unfortunately the reason for my low high school stats are because I missed 70 and 50 days of junior and senior year respectively due to a stem cell transplant and intestinal surgery. I also missed a large amount in freshmen and sophomore year due to Crohn's disease also. My high school career has been marred with not being able to focus solely on school.

After undergoing surgery I am now completely healthy and able to focus on academics. After a semester at stonehill I feel greatly unchallenged but it seems I am stuck here now because of my past grades.

Do you think by submitting information about my past health issues and experiences in the extra info section of the common app. it would be too my benefit or should I just forget about it altogether?

Dear bconstant : Your medical history is a MAJOR component in play here and you must fully explain the situation. While there is no guarantee that your story will be sufficiently heard to accept your application, leaving out this information leads the reader to the conclusions that I drew - perhaps incorrectly.

Regardless of school, friend, you now have your health back and that is substantially more valuable than worrying about Stonehill vs. Boston College. Congrats on winning the substantially more important battle.

thanks a lot scottj, I will explain it as best I can and hopefully it will be looked at as a strength in face of adversity and may compensate for my hs record somewhat.
