CHANCES @ UC/CSU?

Hi, I was wondering what the best UC’s/CSU’s I have a chance at getting into?

Stats:
Weighted GPA: 3.57
African American
Male
Live in San Diego, considered a local to SDSU

SAT:
Reading and Writing: 560
Math: 590
Total: 1150
(Planning on taking again to get above 1200)
Essay: 6/6/6
Many EC’s

Notes: Grades have continuously improved throughout the years of high school.

Schools Interested In: UCSC, CSULB, SDSU, UCR, CSUF,

  1. Is your weighted GPA of 3.57, your UC/CSU capped weighted GPA? https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

  2. Once you know your UC/CSU capped weighted GPA, please calculate your Eligibility index which the Cal States use for admission purposes:
    Then calculate your Eligibility index:
If you took the Redesigned SAT:
(CSU capped weighted GPA X 800) + (SAT Evidence Based Reading & Writing (EBRW) + Math Score) = Eligibility Index

3)Race/Ethnicity not considered by UC’s or CSU’s so no bump there.

  1. Intended major?

  2. HS course rigor?

  1. If i calculated it right, my weighted capped is also 3.57? I included an extra college course I took for in the summer, Roger Hub said to add in summer courses but not credit recovery courses.
  2. (3.57 X 800)+(560+590) = 4006
  3. Not sure yet, maybe Architecture, or Chemical Engineering, maybe Psychology.
  4. I took AP Art History, Honors Chemistry, Honors U.S History first semester of Junior year, then I switched into Honors Eng Literature for second semester, which means I took Honors US History, AP Art History, Honors Chemistry, and Honors Eng Literature for second semester. I also took an English college class over the summer of Junior to Senior year, and am in another English college class for my first semester of Senior year then i will be in a College History class second semester, and I am also taking AP Chemistry, and Honors Pre-Calculus for my Senior year.

Also, my GPA is lower because Spanish was a struggle for me since freshman year, I mainly got C’s and a couple times a B, my other core classes are all A’s and B’s. If that makes a difference in their decisions.

Regarding Majors: none of your listed schools offer Architecture. You might want to add Cal Poly Pomona to the list but this school would be a slight Reach for Architecture, ChemE and Pysch. You might want to consider Civil Engineering or Construction Engineering for the schools that do not offer Architecture.

Being local for SDSU helps but several local applicants were denied last year with 4100 EI’s so this school is a High match 50/50 chance. SDSU does not offer Architecture or ChemE. Pysch has about a 30% acceptance rate. Construction or Civil might be a better option.

CSUF (assuming Fullerton) looks like a Match but no Architecture or Chem E.

CSULB looks like a High match due to the # of applicants (most applied CSU). Both Chem E and Psych would be tough admits.

For the UC’s, GPA is king so here are some admit rates not major specific.
Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79:

UCB: 2%
UCLA: 3%
UCSD: 6%
UCD: 15%
UCSB: 14%
UCI: 13%
UCSC: 59%- High Match
UCR: 78%- Match
UCM: 92%- Safety
Make sure you spend time on your essays.

Recommendations: since you are a URM, I would explore this advantage by applying to some private schools such Univ of San Diego (USD), Whittier college, Univ of Redlands, Loyola Marymount to name a few. I would also add in another Cal state as a safety such as San Marcos, SFSU, Sac State, SJSU.
Apply widely for the best chances.

Best of luck.

UCSC could go either way. As a local applicant - SDSU will probably take you but, not for the most competitive majors. Undeclared would probably work. I think UCR and CSU LB and Fullerton will accept you.

CPP - probably not for architecture but, they do look at your alternate major so, if you put Psych, you’ll probably get in. I’d add Chico and Sonoma, a couple of residential campuses that you are highly likely to accept you.

Lots if great options open to you.
Good luck
