CHANCES UPENN/COLUMBIA IVIES AND UCs!!!

My last post here in Chances:

Hi, I’m Chinese and I go to a public high school in the Bay Area (I know, I know). I was born in China and am a Chinese citizen. I speak Chinese, English, and Spanish (learned in high school).

2240 (760 M 750 V 730 W) New SAT I
790 US History SAT II
760 Math SAT II

Biology AP- 5
US History AP- 5

Taking 3 AP classes senior year (English AP, Economics AP, Calculus BC AP)

Our high school does not offer that many AP classes...basically freshmen and sophomores do not have any AP classes available to them.

U/W GPA 3.996 (Only 1 B in my entire HS career and it was in freshmen year, straight A's both sophomore and junior year)
Weighted 4.225
Weighted (10-12) 4.38
Weighted (11) 4.67

School doesn’t give rankings. I wish they did though, if they did I’d be ranked number one, since our school doesn’t weigh grades or count freshmen year grades.

ECs:

Debate Team- 4 years (Captain jr Year, President snr year). Awards at many tournaments. Also, unlike many other schools, our school has a very small team and doesn’t have a debate team coach so I pretty much taught all the novices (some of whom are pretty successful) and handled all the administrative issues. I also was basically single-handedly responsible for the progression of our program. My freshmen year we had 3 members and we went to 2 local tournaments. My junior year we had 50 something members and went to 8 national circuit tournaments. All my success has also been attained without a coach. I plan to write about this in my essay. My debate advisor will write a letter of rec, talking about my ability to teach novices, work without a coach, ect.

Junior Statesmen of America- 2 years (a member since it was started my junior year). Leadership position guaranteed, either vice president or speaker of house/senate senior year. We go to conventions and have debates every week.

Socio-Political Activist League- 3 years (a member since it was created my sophomore year). Vice president senior year. We go to rallies, protests, and organize mock elections.

Student Representative on Student Site Council senior year. This is where the school decides where it allocates a lot of its' funds.

CSF (California Scholarship Federation)- Member 9-12 years. Did community service activities like tutoring poor inner city kids, gift wrapping for charity, judging for novice debate tournaments. Not TOO involved in this club so not an officer.

Key Club- Member for 9th, 10th and 12th grade. Same as above basically.

Football team (JV) Sophomore year.

Internship at Xceive (Start-Up Company) for 4 weeks. 8 hours each day. Helped them complete numerous projects like do powerpoints, write for their website, make graphs and do statistical analysis, ect. Planning to get the person I worked under (VP of Marketing) to write me a letter of rec.

Internship under Assemblywoman Sally Leiber (Assistant Speaker of the California Legislative assembly). About 5 hours a week for 2 months. We get to sit in on the Assemblywoman’s meetings, handle and get exposed to social and political issues, and basically see how the state legislative body works first hand.

My essay ought to be very good and my letters of rec will be decent as well.

I’d say my hook is definitely debate. And the fact that all my ECs are very focused towards a political/law/business-related career.

College List:

Early Decision, University of Pennsylvania (Wharton)
Columbia
Northwestern
UC Berkeley
UCLA

Thanks for the input!

well goodluck but its a crapshoot, keep that in mind. i think you're like everyone else but someones gotta get in!

BreakOrDeath88:

Assuming you are a California resident,
UCB: Match
UCLA: Match

ucla and ucb = match
northwestern you defintily have a great chance
columbia might be a reach
not sure about upenn wharton

Thanks! Anyone else?

assuming you are UC resident......UCB and UCLA are matches i suppose....
I go to bay area high too :) Northgate high near walnut Creek and danville.....what school u go to?

Wow, you have a great shot for Wharton. Experience tells me I'll get bashed for calling any school rated as top 25 by USNews anything below "slight reach", so I'll just avoid those designations altogether.

You have slightly (only academically) better stats than a good friend who got into Wharton ED. He was an officer in several clubs and won several MUN awards. Another good friend also got in by being President of MUN and an officer in Model Congress and winning several awards as well.

It seems like they really care about leadership and business savvy (debate counts) as well as academics, and you have all three!

Good luck!

how'd you get those internships?

sigh...
MUN and its inane debates

i think u have a rele strong chance at all of them. except maybe columbia which is always a crapshoot.

and wharton isnt?

At least it's easy to figure out what Wharton is looking for. Columbia mystifies the majority.

Thanks to everyone!

Bump again

anyone else??

your stats are solid. yes to ucla, berkeley. probably to columbia. for upenn, you might want to do something that sets you apart from others who have similar stats as you.
