Chances warning....

I am seeing lots of chances threads. Lots of kids getting more and more anxious as the magic Feb. deadline approaches... I'm sure the number of posts will increase as we get closer.

Folks, there is no score, GPA, set of EC's or essay that makes a student's acceptance a slam-dunk at UF. I teach at a magnet school, and every year we have several head-scratching rejections (scores well ABOVE the 75% #, GPA ABOVE 4.0, great EC's, etc.) These are kids who DO get accepted to other very selective schools.

Please get ready to be happy if you are accepted, but, if all possible, no matter how great your application, try NOT to feel like you've been punched in the gut if you are not accepted. UF really DOES have too many qualified applicants to accept them all.

Good luck to everyone, and please don't believe the folks who might say you are a shoo-in. That doesn't exist at UF anymore. Try not to get your heart set on ANY one school. The boards are full of kids who have moved on from their initial disappointment to a GREAT college experience at a different school. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of kids who never seem to truly move on and make the most of the other school. Find a safety you'll love.

Best to everyone...

I couldn't have said it any better.

Thanks for posting this thread!
your message has really helped me alot. my heart is set on UF and everyone has been telling me that you just never know. my back ups i believe aren't that great [ UCF or USF ], but hopefully something good will come my way. thanks for your posting and great advice !

all of this is true. Personally, I'm mentally ready to get rejected from UF. If i get in, that is great, and if I don't, it is not the end of the world.

I thought with folks counting down the minutes, I'd bump this.
Please remember that you are not your college acceptances.

UF really DOES have too many qualified applicants. There are some really, really head-scratching rejections every year. If you are in that group, you'll do great anywhere, and have a wonderful college experience wherever you end up.

Good luck to everyone.

This brings back so many memories re: my son this same time last year. You can chance all you want; you just never know. You hope there is something in your application that makes you stand out enough for the acceptance. All my son's friends are happy where they evenually landed.
My son did get accepted into UF and is thriving there beyond our wildest dreams. He already has career opportunities that will land him elsewhere beside home for spring break and the summer.
Good luck to all!

Like I said in another thread, I know someone who got in with a sub-par GPA and a 1240 SAT and others rejected with 1300+'s. I've come to the conclusion that at a certain point, the process is random.

I hope I get in, but I realize my chances with my scores are about 50/50, and have fully accepted the possibility of going to FSU. As a school, it's not that much lower than Florida; it's widely respected, has decent athletics, etc. Personally, I'd just prefer Gainesville to Tallahassee (and I've been a Gator fan for as long as I can remember).
