During Junior year I got into some major trouble by joining a group of friends to work together on a HW assignment. We split up terms to define the words in APUSH since we were having a hell-week with ridiculous assignments in our AP classes. Most of the kids that I worked with were ivy-prone and the top students of our class. I know there is no excuse for cheating as it is comparable to robbing a bank or anything that is so unethical. I know that you will feel like bashing and flaming my post. Don't bother. I've already understood the magnitude of my failure and arrogance to disrespect the school rules, as well as the administration to think that we would not have gotten caught.

What I need to know is this: Will this 1 day in house suspension (not knowing if it shows up on my transcript) and this "Cheating File" ruin my chances into attending UCLA, UCSD, UCB, USC, or any private schools?

***I am a high ranked athlete and I may get recruited or be allowed to "walk-on" to some of these schools. If the college coach endorses my application or even accepts me, will I still have a chance of getting rescinded? I heard that the UC application does not contain a box that asks for Academic Dishonesty, but that we have to include it on our transcript to eliminate the surprise or shock in the adcoms at the school. In addition, I know that we are supposed to write an essay. If i write a good enough essay will I still have the chance of being rescinded? My academics are not anywehre as great as they should be for a UCLA undergraduate student but the hook that I have could still give me a chance to get in.

Stats:
GPA Weighted: ~3.7
Unweighted: 3.500 (took all accel and aps soph and junior year)
SAT: 1950, going to raise it to 2150+ hopefully
SAT2s weak.. USH: 620
ECs: varsity tennis (frosh)
speech oratory captain (soph)
high-placing finalist of several varsity national invitational speech tournaments (Stanford, Santa Clara, State Quals, few others) in freshman and sophmore year
Volunteering hours like everyone else...
Coached kids tennis
USTA Top 20 B16s
hopefully USTA Top 20 in 18s soon

Honestly, I do not think I am a bad person, or one with bad character, it's just that I was not able to handle the athletic regimen that I Chose to follow and the AP classes that i Chose to take. Of course, this failure lays on me and only me because it was my responsibility to handle the course load that I chose. In the end, I just hope that all the work that I've put into my athletic career as well as my academic career, will not tumble down because of this dire mistake.

I had a friend who got into all the UC schools even though he had an expulsion on his record. Typically UC schools don’t ask for discipline records, but on the application it asks if you were ever suspended or expelled. You must answer that truthfully cuz if they ever found out you lied, they could yank you right out of school. There is an optional essay as part of the UC system, and I would recomend that you write about the incident and explain that you are very sorry and have learned your lesson and what not. Your chances of getting in are still good, as people with worse things on their record have gotten accepted. BTW cheating is in no way comparable to robbing a bank, and Just about everyone has done it at one point in their lives. People who flame you are simply being hypocritical. Best of luck!

i don’t think it would be that serious, but just keep the grades up (maybe bring it up a little higher gpa wise), improve the SAT2s to 700s and you should be fine… i think tennis should be the main factor to get you in if you are top 20 (socal or nation?)

Your GPA worries me more than the in-house suspension…
3.7 weighted is going to make it kinda difficult to get in. If you raise your SAT score like you said, that will help a little.

Hopefully that speech stuff will be able to pull you through, write good essays though :D

True but then again scores aren’t everything. I had a 3.7 unweighted with a much lower SAT score and got in. PLUS, I was suspended before. HOWEVER, it didn’t seem to have an impact on my acceptance to UCLA So I highly doubt this will go on your record unless your school is very anal about it.

Thank you everybody for your replies. They are greatly, without a doubt appreciated. Yes, my GPA is terribly low because I sacrificed my junior year and decided to risk it all - yes, I resigned from the speech and debate team and I devoted myself to a crazy tennis regimen. I was pretty arrogant at the time since I wanted to try and “DO IT ALL” but of course it failed, along with the trouble that I got myself into.

3.7 Weighted is definitely low and I am studying every night and devoting an hour and a half to SAT studying. I’ve bought about 4 books of SAT practice tests, enrolled in a SAT program, and I am going to find a way to get a 2200+ to satisfy myself academically, as well as my parents.

Yes, It is top 20 for Norcal, not nation otherwise I wouldn’t be worrying at all about this suspension … And even then top 20 for norcal isnt that high compared to a Socal player but with the right connections, there are possibilities.

And I agree, scores’ aren’t everything, but of course they certainly do play a role in admissions.

Anyways, this thread should be closed, fretting about it will just create more inaction, and more inaction just creates nothing. I might as well just study and whatever happens, happens.
