Chances with interesting circumstances...?

Hi everyone.

So, this is not a typical "chance me" thread, as I have a bit of an interesting story to tell. First off, I'll give you my stats so you have an idea of where I'm coming from:

I'm from out-of-state at one of the most up-and-coming public schools in the nation. We don't do class rank, but based on our statistics, I should fall within the top 20% of my graduating class.
GPA: 3.63/3.75
ACT: 30
4 APs taken
President of 3 Major clubs on campus
2 years of Student Government with an elected position
Musical theater productions
Improvisational Comedy Club

Now, these numbers are clearly below GWU's accepted averages from past years. However, throughout high school I've accomplished the aforementioned stats while at the same time playing the role of full-time caretaker for my mom, who has been battling stage 4 breast cancer for many years now. I wrote about it in my essay, but I've been quite concerned about my chances to get in, as I don't know how "sympathetic" the admissions team can get. Since GWU is my number one choice, this has been a major concern of mine.

I've actually developed quite a nice relationship with my admissions counselor at GWU over the past few months, talking about various things both college related and not.

Due to my home-life circumstances, I've not been able to visit the campus.

Please, I'd love to get some feedback on what my chances are.

Thank you so much! :)

wow you have almost identical stats as I did (GPA and ACT) and similar activities. I got in ED 1 so I think you have a very good chance especially if your essays are excellent and unique.

Good luck and all the best to your mother!

Bump! Would like some more input. :)

sam, any possibility of ED2? I think you’d be accepted. RD is kind of variable and hard to predict, so if FA is not a big problem, please apply ED2.

Where do you live? Close enough to get home when you want to?

Good luck- I hope you get in.:)

Hey Schmohawk. I actually live almost as far away from GW as possible. Southern California. And unfortunately, FA is a major issue, as most money is going to mom’s cancer treatments.

Samsam,
Keep in mind that Socal is a long and expensive plane ride from DC and not conducive to frequent, last-minute or spur of the moment trips home. Spend some time contemplating the reality of being that far away from home for extended periods. It is going require significant adjustment considering your personal circumstances. You have some tough choices to make, and I wish you luck.

Distance isn’t a major issue. I have money set aside specifically for plane tickets and whatnot. One thing my mother has made me promise her is that what’s going on in her life can’t affect my progression. She wants me to be at the school that is right for me, so if GWU is that place, then I’m willing to be so far away.
