Chances? (:

Hi, I was just wondering if I had a chance to get into W&M. Some people have been telling me that it's a little on the safety side but my counselor thinks it might be a little hard to get in since I'm an out of state student.
I'm applying anyways because I really loved the atmosphere but I want to know anyways (:

I'm an International student but I think I'm counted as a US student since I'm a US citizen, just at an international/American school.
Cumulative GPA: 3.67
Senior year, first semester GPA: 3.57
(We don't weight the grades at my school and there are no rankings, at least the counselors don't tell us them, but I'm probably in the top 25%.)

I'm an IB Diploma student:
Bio HL - predicted 7
Psych SL - predicted 5/6
Theater HL - predicted 5/6
Chinese B HL - predicted 6
English SL - predicted 5/6
Math SL - predicted 7
TOK - probably B
EE - unknown

SAT: 670W, 670R, 750M
SAT II: Math II - 720, Bio - 730, Chinese - 770

Extracurriculars:
JV soccer, 3 years (hopefully varsity soccer this year)
JV volleyball, 2 years
Tutoring, 2 years
Habitat for Humanity, 4 years - helped w/ Raise Your Voice for 2 years (original project from a friend/other Habitat member)
Habitat trips, 2 trips (Guangdong, China and Cambodia)
International Thespian Society, 3 years - 20 points (equals 200 hours of theater work), multiple productions

Other:
College credit from American University (1 credit) - Global Public Health (I actually don't know what I got but I'm in the processing of finding my scores)
National Student Leadership Conference, Medicine - 10 days of studying medicine and related things in DC, plus leadership exercises

Gender: female
Race: Asian - Chinese (1/4 Tibetan, but only briefly mentioned)
Feel free to ask if there's anything else you need to know to chance me (:
Thanks!

I just saw a post about how W&M consider IB diploma to be the most challenging/rigorous course load and that it prepares students well for a liberal arts education. That should help me right?

Sounds like you have a lot to offer: a strong curriculum, solid SAT scores and experience abroad. You are correct, pursuing the IB diploma will make you very competitive as far as course rigor is concerned. Of course, that’s only one part of our review process but it’s a good start.

If you are a US citizen then you are not considered an international applicant though we certainly appreciate the perspective that students who have lived abroad can bring and we encourage you to tell us about that experience.

Your SAT scores are on the upper end of our middle 50% range which is good. Do let us know if you hold any leadership roles (maybe you’ve held lead roles in theatre or captained a sport). That can help distinguish you and it’s something we like to see, especially if you attend a smaller school (which many overseas schools tend to be).

No one should consider W&M a safety school given that we are a very selective institution which utilizes a very holistic review process. That doesn’t mean W&M is a huge reach for every student. It just means that when we deny more people than we admit (by a measure of 2:1, considering W&M a safety school is likely unreasonable).
