Chances

What are my chances - application is going out today. Very competitive HS, lots accepted to Michigan every year. Top 10% of class. SAT V 720 M 800 W 710 Excellent essays, ECs and recs. Lots of APs, rest all honors. Michigan GPA 3.5 Weighted GPA 4.5?? Thanks.

r u instate?

Please don't tell me that with a 2230 SAT, excellent essays and recs, and a competitive gpa, that being in-state affects OP's chances significantly?

Sorry, no, out of state.

you'll get in

Your GPA is low, but your SAT (1520 on the M and V sections) is excellent and you are in the top 10% of your class. Michigan is a very safe match for you.

Thanks very much.

The GPA would worry me. Considering it's by far the largest concern in Michigan's decisions, and they are below the 25%, as well as OOS (two big points against him, hurt. Sure they have great test scores, but OOS and low GPA hurt.

A2Wolves, the GPA is indeed important, but Michigan obviously knows the high school he attends since they accept many from his school annually. His GPA may be low by Michigan standards but he is ranked in the top 10% of his class, which means that his school tends to grade harshly. And his SAT is over 1500. He actually has very similar stats to mine. My GPA was under 3.6 back in the day and my SAT was over 1500. I wasn't even ranked in the top 25%! So yes, GPA is very important, but Michigan does look at the entire package.

We sent a kid or 2 with 3.6 WEIGHTED gpa's last year, one of them to engineering.

I don't even go to a competitive high school.

Actually, as far as a I know we only had one person get rejected last year, and that was an Asian female with around a 3.6 or 7 u/w and a 29 ACT.

I'm glad to hear that Michigan looks at the big picture. This seems like a very competitive year all over, and I'm not taking anything for granted! The GPA is my big worry, that and the fact, that our school doesn't really offer many APs until senior year. Thanks for the feedback.

Dang... don't be hating on the 3.6 weighted GPAs.... oh well, at least I know that people like me are getting accepted.
