Chances

I just got back my SAT scores.
Well my most recent scores are 700CR, 740W and 730M. If i super score it, its 700CR, 740W and 760M. I only took the SAT two times. I got a 770 on Math II and 800 on Physics and Chem.
I was wondering what my chances are to get into Carnegie Mellon. and if i should retake any of these tests (mainly SAT I and Math II).

Thanks

Those scores are all fine. There’s really no point in taking the SAT a 3rd time because statistically your chances of improving your score are very slim. Depending on what school you’re applying to, you may want to take a few more subject tests if you’re comfortable in any pertinent subjects, but it’s not necessary. If you really don’t think your SAT score is high enough (though I would disagree), you should give the ACT a shot because some people find it easier. You’d need at least a 34 for it to be an improvement upon your SAT score, but it’s up to you.

Thanks so much.
I’m interested in applying to the Engineering department at CMU.
Would that change anything?

Also my GPA at my school is a 5.2 out of a possible 6.
Thanks again for the help.

any suggestion?

what’s your class rank or estimated percentile?

20 percentile in my grade.

Do you mean top 20%? Or 20th percentile as in you rank better than only 20% of your grade?

Either way to be honest, your chances are close to zero. Top 20% is not competitive for CMU at all.

@zyzzboi: Lulz.

@OP: Totally depends on your activities and essays and rec letters. A friend of mine got in with a 2150 or something like that, and he had worse SAT II scores.

@contana431 Top 20% is absolutely fine if the overall application is good. I got into MCS (which has approximately the same standards as CIT) while not in the top 10%, though I did break top 10% by graduation.

Hey Guys,

I have a 3.8UW GPA, and an 1820 SAT (rewriting) and a 33 act. I have a 790 in sat math 2 and 710 in physics.

what are my chances?

i want to major in physics.
