I'm from out of state (Florida), and unsure about my chances for UVA.

I'm in the IB program at school, and have a 4.0 unweighted GPA and and 4.98 weighted

2130 SAT (710 CR 690 M 730 R)

Varsity Soccer Team, soccer club team captain, JV basketball, Cross country team, Work at a restaurant (12 hours a week), Math, Science, English, National Honor Societies, attended engineering leadership conference summer of 2014, several service projects.

3 AP tests: World History (4), Language and Comp (4), APUSH (5)
Top 2% of county students

Future plans: chemical or materials science engineer

Your GPA is great but the SAT will definitely hurt you. Your EC’s aren’t great, so I think it’s a toss up. Are you a URM or have any other hooks?

Under represented minority (native american, african american, hispanic…)

I’m a white male, which I realize does not help my chances. However, UVA’s 25% range is 1870-2180 for the SAT, so how would my SAT hurt me? It’s not spectacular, but it’s in the upper range.

Because you have to consider the people in the 25% range will be athletes, musicians, people recruited for other things, URM, etc. For a school as competitive as UVA you have to be towards the upper end of the middle 50% range if you don’t have a unique hook.

I understand, and I am in the upper 50%, but I realize it will be tough, especially coming out of state. I did have great recommendations, however, and well written essays, and I applied early action, so do you think any of those factors will significantly influence their decision?

Absolutely. But it’s just really hard for a white male to get into a school of that caliber with average scores and no incredible hook. You definitely have a chance, but I would say it’s between 40-50%

Thanks! I’m worried, but there isn’t anything I can do now.

Sorry didn’t mean to worry you! But that’s my honest opinion

I recently took chemistry and math 2 subject tests for the first time. What scores are considered worthy to send in your opinion? I’m haven’t recieved my scores back yet.
