Chances?

I'm considering applying to SCS or CIT or IS
I'm really not sure what the differences are...
I'm assuming CIT is more general sciences
IS is computer science incorporated with management
SCS is just computer science
am I correct? could you give me chances in each?

===Begin Stats=========================================
Freshman GPA: 3.4 (to be honest, I didn't take classes seriously.)
Sophomore GPA: 3.6(realized the mistake of Freshman year and tried harder, but got an A-, and 2 B+)
Junior GPA: 3.8(yay, steady progress of .2 a year!!)

Class Rank: As far as I know, our school does not rank students, they say they don't because it is a magnet school and the students are all competitive. But I think I can be somewhere in the top 20% (300 students in my class)

Honors: All Non AP/IB courses are honors(for everyone.)
----APs-------------
I've taken no APs so far, and Will Probably not take one this year, because I do not qualify for the following AP classes available to juniors:
AP Chemistry(B+ in chem)
AP Calculus AB, BC(i'm in a lower level math class, will be taking it next year)
AP Microeconomics(need completion of the math class I am in now, to qualify)

However, I did do Independent Study...
AP Micro(Expecting 4 or 5)
AP Stats(Expecting 4 or 5)

I am currently taking IB English,
I did not try for IB Spanish(un-interested)(spanish was also the other class i had a B+ in)
I did not try for IB History(would require an extra class next year for history, and I need that time to take AP classes)

My school only offers a few AP classes:
AP Chemistry
AP Physics [Senior only]
AP Biology [Senior only]
AP Calculus AB, BC
AP Computer Science [Senior only]
AP Music Theory
AP Microeconomics
AP Statistics [Senior only]

----SATs-------------
April 2006:
Critical Reading 680[Considerable lower than in October, I might get it hand-checked]
Math 740
Writing 670

October 2006:
Critical Reading 760
Math 710
Writing 610

June 2006:[estimates]
Physics 680-710
Math IIc 670-700

----ECs-------------
1)200+ Community Service at Summer Recreation

2)Web Club: (Helped to redisign our school's website, and the county's special services district website www.bergen.org)

3)Model UN: member for 3 years, starting from Sophomore year, competing at 3 Conferences per year, we also hold our own school conference in which I delegated during my sophomore year, staffed during junior year and will be on the secretariat during Senior Year.

4)Choir for three years, I know its not much, but i'm unsure whether I should try for county/regional/allstate, for now lets say no. I have tried for Chamber Choir(our higher-ranking choir(?)) I am awaiting a reply.

5)Fresh Angles, a school-run magazine, where I worked as the technical staff in charge of their website www.freshangles.com

6)Manager of School Fundraising. Since there are countless organizations and clubs etc in our school who all want money from the students pockets and always want bakesales and whatnot, I am in charge of organizing thhe fundraisers and making sure only one organization has a sale at a time and that all of it runs smoothly.

If all goes well i'll be attending CMU's AP/EA program, I was accepted but there may have been problems with billing and reserving a room or something

I'll hopefully be taking
15-200 Advanced Programming/Practicum
21-120 Differential and Integral Calculus

and so if I do well in these courses and if I like the school... i'll apply EA
===End Stats=========================================

Also curious, when applying to CMU, do you have to declare what school you're applying to and if you do..
do you get to rank the schools? like 1st SCS, 2nd IS, 3rd CIT so that if you don't get into the first choice you may get second or third?

CIT is the engineering school. When applying you declare the schools you're applying to and rank them.

SCS is a reach and so is CIT to a degree. Top 20% will hurt you but good essays/scores may help you. IS is probably a match but I heard they had huge increase in apps too.
Just work on your essays and you can probably get into CIT/IS but it depends on whether or not you ED get those high test scores.

My friends who applied along with me to SCS/CIT/MCS (the usual trio) and then IS/HSS were all well in the top 10%. As AA said, that's probably your big worry. As for the SAT, I don't really know how they affect admission except again, my friends who did get in all had above 2100s for SCS/CIT/MCS and lower for IS/HSS.

Hey GoldenDragon,

First to clarify:

IS --> Computer Science + Business...its part of humanities department and is not considered too difficult to get in. I think you will qualify very well for this school.

CIT --> Engineering School. Biomedical, Chemical, Electrical, etc... Depends on how well you do on the apps, but I think you have a chance getting in, and it should be a good match for you.

SCS --> Computer Science...it is the most difficult school to get in within CMU. The average math SAT I/SAT II and other science SAT IIs are very high for this school, and so is SAT. However, I got in with 2080 SAT so yeah, you shouldn't give up. But I think you might want to do early decision if you want to get in here.

wrong: and so is SAT
correct: and so is GPA/rank

ahh, thanks for replying to the thread!

looking at the stats posted on the site can be misleading I guess...
I do think I'll apply there, and hopefully(depending on how my time there this summer goes... i'll apply EA)

thanks again!

how hard is tepper to get into?
