I'm a Junior right now, and as the last marking period my GPA is around a 3.0 (I think). I haven't taken the SAT yet but I've taken the PSAT and scored a 151 (Critical Reading: 48, Mathematics:57 and Writing Skills: 46). I know my GPA is very low and so is my PSAT scores. I just want to know my chances of getting in. I know it may be a bit too late to boost up my GPA but what SAT scores should I aim for in order to at least get looked at?

My son is a senior. He got a 1250(out of 1600) on his SAT and has a 89-90 average. He was rejected from Binghamton. I think if you want to be considered for Bing you need a solid low-mid 90's grade and a 1300 plus SAT. To me that is crazy for a state school, but there is a lot of competition out there.

He was easily accepted into both Albany and Stony Brook.

Rich- I can't believe that was a rejection! I'm am really surprised. I know this year Bing has gotten over 23,000 application. At least 2,000 over last years.
I am hearing that the competition this year is really tough. To me if it is that tough those numbers would at least been a deferment.

I am sorry for your son. I hope he likes the other two.

Your GPA seems to be below average. And your PSAT score indicates that you need a lot of work for the SAT. Without looking at your personal statement, letters of recommendation, extracurriculars, I say at least get above 2000. Study hard for the SATs.

Boy, I love that about this site... "I say at least get above a 2000." Like someone can just go in on a Saturday morning, sit down, and score a 2000.

First of all, don't worry about the writing section; SUNY schools don't require it, and likely won't in '08 either. Second, RichNY is pretty right-on about the GPA/SAT requirements between Binghamton, Stony Brook, and Albany; Binghamton's CR/Math SAT average is probably somewhere around 1300, and ours this year is around 1240. Albany's probably somewhere around ours also. It also depends on your program; our School of Engineering and Applied Science is more restrictive than others, and I'd guess that Binghamton has similar restrictions on some programs.

A lot of people think "state school" and assume automatic admission, but SUNY's a big system. Every high school graduate is admissible to a SUNY campus; it just might not be the one you'd like. It's always possible to transfer down the road, though.

Applications are up across the system this year, I think; we're up over 14% right now, which is an enormous jump, even considering that there are more HS seniors this year than there were last year. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective), when the pool jumps like that, the numbers are only going to get higher.

Good luck! Don't stress too much over the college search process... just take care of yourself.

The OP asked what score he needs in order to be competitive for Binghamton given his low GPA.

I don't know why you have so much time to be spent trolling on the Binghamton section. Did the applications go up 14% at Stony Brook? Really...?
