Safety School.

ms.thang: Can you elaborate? Are you referring to Cornell, in general, as a safety school or in regards to my "chances" question?

Cornell is not out of your reach...spend a crap load of time on the essay and definitely apply ED :)

Also apply to stanford, princeton etc. to maximize your chances of getting into a top school

golubb_u: With my SAT and GPA, I don't think I stand a chance at those two schools.

He has a point.

I'm pretty sure ms. thang's being arrogant and trying to **** us off :)...even though she was rejected from GW, her "safety school"

Leigh or anyone...when you say 4 recs, does that include the automatic guidance counselor one? I really wanted to include one from my school's principal, but I know I need academic teachers too...if the guidance rec didn't count, I'd have more room...

Yup, 4 recs in total. I think it'll also be good if you can get a letter from someone who knows you outside the academic field... but I'm porbably stating the obvious LOL.

Spanks: haha no kidding about the GW thread. XD

Anyone else care to comment on chances?

I'd say you're lookin good soliloquy, and your SATs definitely won't HURT your app, so don't worrry about that.

Does anyone know if Band counts as an academic subject? I mean, we don't just play music.... Maybe I should call the Admissions office...

No it doesn't. I think its just extracurricular, even if you do color guard or whatnot.

*Non-core.

yeah thats what I meant by double edged sword.

no, your SAT won't hurt you at all. It's just not at the incredibly high level where it could serve as a hook...thats NOT a bad thing

mmmmmmmmmmmm

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

what race are u? educated parents or not? rich or not? i need to know these factors

if u r a white person, w/ college eduacted parents and middleclass family, here are ur chances:

ED:

Accepted: 45%
Deferred: 55%

If Deferred:
Accepted In april: 10%
Waitlisted In April: 89%
Rejected in April: 1%

very realistic

Thank you to all who have posted so far. I haven't gotten the opportunity to sign onto CC in a while and was surprised at the number of responses.

ThomYorke: I suppose my ethnicity isn't going to help. I'm Indian, male. We're middle class, with the highest degree in my family being a BA. Anyway, my dad's the only one in the house who works; my mom is a home maker. Will the factors you mentioned really affect my decisions that much?

u r an INDiAN??????

seriously? WOW!

if u r an AMerican indian: ur chance is like 95%

if u r an Asian Indian: ur chance remains the same

I meant to say Asian Indian, which is why I didn't think it'd help my chances at all. Are my chances simply average (45%) or does my international EC help at all?

45% is above average, even for ED

As for your chances, I'd say good if only you had a few more extracurriculars...if you are a Junior, I'd suggest getting really involved in an organization or project over the summer. CA requires an essay about an EC, so something you have spent many many hours on (and I don't mean 5 hrs a week at the local spca) is really great to write about. This could also lead to a nice rec. (For example, I lucked out when my mentor turned out to be a Harvard alum and a prof at MIT!)

How important is class rank?
