I would still encourage you to apply, but honestly, especially since you didn’t apply priority, with your GPA, low class rank, and low CR score especially, I think you would have to consider UMD a reach, even if you are from Texas. (if you were from NJ or NY, I would think that you would have very little chance—the competition and sheer #'s who apply from there make it very competitive). Every application has different things to offer, so I still think you should apply if you are interested… You didn’t list choices #5-9…I assume you have some (public) Texas schools in there as safeties; and that you’ve already applied there? If not, you really need to do so…just in case.

this sucks…

You never know…I didn’t mean to sound quite so negative, just trying to be realistic. Go ahead and apply. You definitely won’t get in if you don’t apply. Good luck

You’re definitely “borderline.” I would say MD is a “slight reach” for you, considering you did not apply priority.

For one, your GPA is slightly below avg. (avg. weighted at MD is 3.9), and your SAT scores are about avg. Your high math score balances out the low CR score, so I wouldn’t say that’s a problem, but it doesn’t add much either.

I wouldn’t say my guess is that you are not in…honestly I am not sure, since Texas is definitely underrepresented here. But you are at avg. or slightly below avg. for a MD student and having not applied by Nov. 1, that negatively impacts you.

It was a good choice of school to apply to along with the others you picked but yeah, definitely somewhat of a toss up.

I think since you’re applying to 10 schools, you might as well go for it. After all, I’d say it could go either way for you.

Also, if accepted, you’d probably enter in the generic major (College of Letters and ??? can’t remember what it is called). Clark School of Engineering is not likely. However, you can transfer into engineering after you’ve been there for a year or so, provided that you have really good grades.

yea ill definetly apply. what kinda stats do you need for the engineering school?

i made a huge mistake by not realizing the priority deadline

Your stats for engineering are low. I will agree with the others, TX is under represented so you may get in for UMDCP general and from there you can transfer into Engineering. That being said, with the CR of 530 I wonder if there is a reason to explain it away. 700 M and 530 CR is a huge swing that causes an alarm to the admissions dept. You may go engineering, but you will still be req. to take english, and other electives that will require Verbal skills. You can easily be placed on academic probation if you need to spend the majority of your time trying to grasp one class. UMD would rather see a 1230 with an equal split…i.e. 680 M and 650 CR.

Please let me also explain another reason for that desire of strong Verbal skills, many classes as a freshman are in the 200+ taught by TAs, some of them will be TAs with their own unique international accent. It is hard to pass Pysch if you do not have the ability to grasp the textbook. They will turn to you and assign 100 pages of dry, boring reading, you don’t get it, then you will fall behind.

The reason IMHO that UMDCP is starting to get more students is due to their initiative with Scholars, Gemstone and Honors. The majority of these students enter with high enough scores to place out of the 200+ entry classes and go directly into classes of 30-50 students. This allows UMDCP to be a small university while giving the students that large feeling. Best of both worlds.

Looking at all of your choices, I would say you over shot for engineering. BU and NorthEastern are on par for the most part with NYU. SMU looks like a strong safety.

I will keep my fingers crossed and I think that if you do get accepted RD, it will be general, and be thankful your from TX.

The one thing that UMDCP has stated 90%+ are accepted for ED, which means RD is even harder.

Well I have problema reading under a time constraint. I. Gotten over a 600 without timing

I have decent grades in English and history

Should I tell them somewhere on my apparently about the reading portion and why it gave me trouble

On my app sorry I am on a cellphone

Hmm…I dunno, ask your guidance counselor? I think if you have decent grades in English/History that will suggest to them that you don’t test well. Though the fact of the matter is, they don’t spend a lot of time analyzing, it’s really more of a numbers crunching game. If your essay is well written that will help as well, though. Did you send in your app yet? Just send it :)! The sooner the better :)!

I would disagree with bulletandpima that Northeastern is on par with NYU; I think you have a good list. SMU seems like a strong safety as bullet said, and I say Northeastern being a match, BU/UMD being slight reaches, NYU your reach. And if you are applying to other Texas public schools, I think you are pretty well prepared.

yea i am a really good writer. I actually got a perfect score on the essay part of the SAT. i just cant read fast.

a female engineer from texas? Oh, there are way too many of those at UMD. You don’t stand a chance.

Just kidding, engineering is much friendlier to women in admissions. Plus, youre from an under-represented state, so you are definitely competetive.

haha… wow you actually scared me :)
