Chances?

I am a student a Nassau CCC in Long Island and I am going to graduate in May with 70 credits with A.S in B.A, a 3.9 GPA, Dean's list the entire time, Pi Sigma Alpha, graduation with highest distinction, PTK honors society, and the ABG business honors society(not sure if my application for this has gone through with NCCC). Basically zero community service except for the 300-400 hours I did throughout high school which was some 5 years ago.

My problem is that I also went to Stony Brook University prior to Nassau CCC and due to mental problems, got 9 credits during 5 semesters with a .6 GPA. In high school I got a 1200(out of 1600) on the SAT, an 87 UW and 93 W.

What are my chances of getting in if I apply this week/next week as a transfer student for Fall 2010. Will my grades get me into the School of Management? Lets say I don't get into the School of Management, will they let me just go to the school as a regular student(Harper) and then transfer into the SOM in the 2nd or 3rd term if I maintain their 3.5(I think) GPA requirement?

Also would be speaking about my Stony Brook grades and mental problems in the supplemental essay be a good idea? Like basically how it changed me to focus and grow and become better.

It is VERY difficult to get into SOM as a transfer – either from another college or even as an intrauniversity transfer from another school within Binghamton. I have heard that there have been semesters when they accept no SOM transfers. I have no way of knowing whether they will be accepting any for Fall 2010 – someone from admissions would be the only one who could probably answer that.

also, I believe that if you apply to SOM and are rejected, you are rejected, not accepted to Harpur (even if you’d have been accepted to Harpur if you’d applied directly there) - but you should ask the admissions office since they are the ones who’d be able to answer this for sure. but remember, even if you get into Harpur, it is still very difficult to transfer into SOM from Harpur. At the website there is a reference to the fact that students accepted for intrauniversity transfer generally have a gpa of at least 3.5 – but that doesn’t mean that a 3.5 gets you in.

Talking to someone in admissions (or SOM, not sure if there’s someone there to talk to) is probably the best thing to do to get an idea of whether they’ll be accepting transfers to SOM.

Two quick questions if you or anybody else can answer, should I bother transferring my Stony Brook credits? I was just looking over it and I saw that the Cs and Ds I got, my overall GPA between both colleges (SBU/NCCC) is a 3.5. The thing is that I don’t need some of the classes which I got a C or D in, such as psychology or western studies, which I have an equivalent sociology/global history class that meets the gen/major reqs for Binghamton and other classes which I don’t mind taking the BING equivalent to get an A. After realizing I can transfer some Ds I actually have 17 credits from SBU plus the 70 from NCCC so should I apply as a junior with just the NCCC credits or should I apply as a senior with both credits? (70+17= 87 credits). Also I never transferred any credits from SBU when I started NCCC.
So if I am not applying with the SBU credits, I just send my SBU transcript to Bing but don’t need to add SBU as a school in the SUNY application under “Add another My Transfer College” right?

BTW thanks for the suggestions, I will call them Monday.

One last thing, if they say there are still spots left in SOM, do my grades look good? Should I bring up all the high school ECs and Volunteering I did?

You would have to send your transcripts over from NCC regardless as you will need those for applying to transfer. Generally you need at least C- for classes to transfer over and to get credit for. The grades that you got at NCC will NOT factor into your grades at Binghamton, only the credits will.

Yes, what I meant was that, from my understanding, credits/grades from colleges are used for two reasons, to transfers the credits and also for the admission process (both GPAs 3.9 and .6). So if I just want to transfer my NCC credits and forget my SBU credits I know I still have to send both transcripts for the admissions process, but on the application, do I have to add a school (SBU) for where it asks me what colleges I am transferring credits from on or will just NCC be sufficient? I am sorry for all the questions, I just don’t want to screw anything up.

What I am basically asking is, while they are trying to decide if I am accepted or not, they will factor in both schools GPAs, but I have an explanation for the first school (SBU) so will my chances be affected by transferring the stony brook credits along with the NCC credits, or will it be better if I just transfer the good NCC scores (all As expect for a B and B+) and forget the SBU credits.(nothing better than a C+)

Also in the SOM does you specific area of study effect the admission process? I know its difficult to get in regardless, but I want to do Management Information Systems which is under the B.A program and I am hearing Accounting has separate seats compared to the B.A program, is that true?
