Not very many APs being offered, but I am taking 1 this year (English). I will take more next year. I am also taking one dual credit class (Accepted - most in state schools.) Other classes are honors unless they are not offered as honors, dual, or AP.

To be honest your GPA and SAT look low. Some more information would help. Do you know your class rank or the average GPA for your school? What's the breakdown for your SAT scores?

I am not sure at this moment. My SAT score was based on a Mock SAT i took at my school. They will be giving our GPAs this year at my HS. Right now my class rank is hard to calculate, since the students at my school have very close grades. It's also Quite competitive. I will also be taking my PSAT again this year. Any help or advise on improving would be greatly appreciated.

My GPA is on a 4.0 scale

Just raise your score by 500 or 600 points or so lol.

Seriously though, by the Class of 2007 data using the old SAT, 25% of kids at Duke have higher than a 1530 (which is like a 2300) and only 25% of kids at Duke have lower than a 1330 (which is like a 2000) and most of these kids are athletes or something.

I would think each year the average SAT gets higher too, but you'll definetely have time to bring it up so don't worry though

What I have seen is the about a 150-200 point jump under the old model of PSAT and SATs. Say a 180 PSAT total, 65M, 55W, 60CR for a 125 M+CR at the November test of the PSAT during thier sophomore year. This converts to a 1250 SAT. I have seen most students get a 1400-1450 though this varies by student.

Look under the SAT/ACT discussion topics. Search for a topic created by PapaChicken where he tried to assemble this information for students on this board.

Assuming that you got a 540 (1620/3) on each section and you are a HS sophomore going in to your junior year that is a 1080. A jump of 200 puts you at 1280, or as noted above at the low end of Duke students using the old test scores.

Regardless, work hard in school and your tests and see where you get to.

I have a good friend who received a 1480 on her SATs (old ones), extra-curriculars to the hilt, great GPA & rank (#3/300-ish), etc.

She was rejected.

I have yet another friend who received a 1340 SAT/ 31 ACT, extra-curriculars rather unimpressive (moderately involved, mostly sports), good GPA (but not NHS/distinguished honor roll worthy), rank not in top 10%

He got in. (And isn't a basketball player!)

Find any rhyme or reason on that...yeah, yeah- essays and letters of rec are important, I know. However, I highly doubt she bombed hers. And the 1340 SAT boy is about as articulate as George W. Bush, so I doubt an interview/essay pushed him over the edge.

The guy I interviewed with at William & Mary said it best, I think, "If you want to go somewhere- apply. Even if you're a little bit below their average, apply. Someone has to be below average"

Good luck!
