Change intended major at NCSU

As I posted earlier, I was deferred from State. My intended major was Biological Sciences, which is considered a highly selective major. Which major should I switch to? Preferably a major which is less selective. Any suggestions? Also, could someone give me the competition rates among the majors I list.

Criminology
Political Science
Microbiology (I assume this is harder than Biological Sciences?)
Genetics
Zoology
Education, General Studies
Psychology

Thanks!

Hi, you need to spend some time studying the different colleges at NCSU. You need to study the different colleges/graduation requirements.

You should consider NOT applying to any majors in CALS (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences). That rules out Zoology, Microbiology and Genetics.

Perhaps a major in CHASS (College of Humanities and Social Sciences) would be a better choice. Avoid the more popular choices within the college such as say… Psychology or Communications… and consider less popular majors - maybe History or Sociology.

I would put choice # 1 and # 2 in CHASS.

Good luck -

How about Political Science and Psychology? I received A’s in both AP classes. Are these majors competitive? Will I have a higher chance of getting accepted, rather than applying to Biology and Accounting?

Is it even possible to change your intended major while your application is still under review?
Have you called the admissions office to ask if it is allowed at this point in the process?
If not, you probably should get in touch with them and ask.
My S changed his major in the spring semester of senior year but it was after he had already been accepted to NCSU.

Are you really interested in the other majors you mentioned or considering change of major just for admissions purposes? Biology or Accounting vs. Psychology or Political Science? If something related to Biology is your real interest, you might want to consider the College of Natural Resources. It’s a very small dept. in comparison to most at NCSU with interesting majors. Class sizes are small and you get personal attention from your advisor.

Yes. I talked to an admissions counselor yesterday and she informed me that it’s possible to be considered for a different major during the application process. She also stated how selective and competitive the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences is. While I would love to major in Biology, I would rather attend NCSU with another major than get deferred because of my primary choice.

Great news that you can change. Forgot to mention that the College of Natural Resources also offers some nice merit scholarships (applied for separate from the NCSU app.)
