Change major from Nuclear engineering to ChE at UIUC?

I applied to UIUC as a nuclear engineering major and was accepted, but i have become increasingly nervous about the job prospects for NE's vs most other engineering disciplines. What I want to know is if it is possible to change my major from NE to ChE before I even begin classes at UIUC. Would I be able to accept my offer, and then fill out some form or something and change my major or do I have to wait until i actually start classes, and then go through the whole process of switching classes. And ive checked the curriculum for both majors at UIUC, and the first year curricula do not overlap like most engineering majors do, there are some significant differences which is why I want to know if I could switch before I begin my classes.
Thanks for any help.

Bump…

The short answer is no, but confirm with admissions, and the college of engineering and your advisor to let them know of your desire to do an intra-college transfer.

So would i have to finish my first semester as an NE and then start as a ChE my second semester or would i be able to switch at the beginning of my first semester

You’re in the College of Engineering already, so they would consider it an inter-departmental transfer. Call the Engineering College as I stated above for a definitive answer, and not just an opinion, which is what you get here. My guess is that you will not be able to departmentally transfer until Spring term at the earliest, if space is available. Some programs in Engineering are more in demand than others, and, thus, harder to get into, so allowing people to apply for one, and then immediately transfer into another shouldn’t, I would think, be allowed as that would allow an applicant to skirt being initially considered against the program’s applicant pool. I say you need to talk to Engineering directly but unless you would have been admitted to ChE directly, I’d say you’d have to wait at least a semester, and take the classes that are required (talk to your advisor) of a student already in that program.

Ok thanks alot ill definitely give them a call soon

It is feasible, however, I just want to point out that the ChemE (actually ChBE) is not directly under the College of Engineering but LAS.
