"the name of your college matters in med school acceptance"

This is not true. Some chick I know got into Irvine med school from CSUN. CSUN = the biggest bunch of mouth breathers this side of the Mississippi.

Go to the premed forums and search through the thread. It's obvious that the name brand matters.

If you're still not convinced, then head on over to studentdoctor.net and look through the forums.

I've been to those forums, I'm an active member at studentdoctor.net

If YOU read through the posts on the matter (archived as well as current) you'll come to the logical conclusion that undergrad prestige does NOT matter.

Fact of the matter is, UCLA and UCB are nothing when compared to Yale, Harvard, Princeton, etc.

So unless you attended one of the latter, it won't make a bit of difference.

Edit:
I've noticed this debate always comes up when someone is arguing that a 3.5 at X school is better than a 4.0 at Y school. The consensus on the matter is that a 3.5 is a 3.5, any way you slice it.

anchor and tastybeef, you both have very valid points, and I can't decide between the two. I will give studentdoctor.net and the CC premed forums a look. Thanks for the heads up you guys.

I agree with anchor, I'm also on sdn as well :) it's a great resource. School name matters so little its more about what you do at the school pick a school you like and not because you think it will help you get in. By the way anchor what major are you at UCSD and how do you like it there?

To be honest, this name brand conundrum can be answered either way.

If all you want is a MD degree, then your undergrad prestige doesn't matter.

If you are shooting for a top MD program, then your undergrad prestige ABSOLUTELY matters. JHU and Harvard are stellar examples of this.

@tastybeef
I agree with that logic.

I'm a Physiology & Neuroscience major over at SD. I'll be starting courses this fall as a junior, so I can't really comment as to the actual curriculum, but what I can tell you is that the school and surrounding area is just exceptional.

Being originally from Los Angeles, it doesn't have as much in the way of entertainment as I'm used to, but I feel that's a plus actually. Not having so many distractions will ensure I stay on the ball.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'll be all set to take the MCAT following my required o-chem classes (140A this fall, 140B this winter). Ha, better start reviewing.

Where did you transfer from?

L.A Mission/ L.A Pierce/ L.A Valley

Attended all three.
