Change Major

I want to be a lawyer so I chose to major in philosophy because it would give me a better chance of passing the LSAT but I have realized that I am not interested in philosophy. I am attending SDSU this fall so I want to know how hard it would be to change my major from philosophy to psychology.

Almost all majors at SDSU are Pre-majors meaning you need to complete the Pre-req courses for that major and have a specific GPA before officially declaring the major. At orientation, talk to your advisor about wanting to change majors and they should help you outline a plan.

Impacted Program
The psychology major is an impacted program. To be admitted to the psychology major, students must meet the following criteria:

a. Complete with a grade of C (2.0) or better: Psychology 101, 201, 211, 230, 260, 280, and Biology 100 (or Biology 203). With the exception of Psychology 201, these courses cannot be taken for credit/no credit (Cr/NC). The minimum grade in each class is C (2.0) or better. NOTE: Psychology majors may use Psychology 280 to satisfy Mathematics/ Quantitative Reasoning General Education requirement. Note Also: A college level statistics course will be accepted from another department (Biology 215; Civil Engineering 160; Economics 201; Political Science 201; Sociology 201; Statistics 119 or 250) combined with Psychology 281 in lieu of Psychology 280. Psychology 280 must be completed with a grade of B (3.0) or better for students in the emphasis in industrial and organizational psychology;

b. Have a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or better.

To complete the major, students must fulfill the degree requirements for the major described in the catalog in effect at the time they are accepted into the premajor at SDSU (assuming continuous enrollment).

Advising
All students planning to major in psychology are urged to visit the Psychology Undergraduate Advising Office (Life Sciences 105). Students should meet with a psychology adviser at least once per semester to ensure they are on track to graduate. The Advising Office is open year-round and may be contacted at 619- 594-5412, psychology.advising.sdsu@mail.sdsu.edu.

@Gumbymom thank you so much for the reply. I will ask to switch my pre-major at orientation
