I've already somewhat finished my common app essay, but now I'm kind of reconsidering the topic.

I feel that I'm somewhat of an average Canadian applicant (Asian male . .premed . .lots of piano and math) but i've played varsity football for 3 years. Our school's team was ranked #1 in Canada for 3 years straight (2001, 2002, 2003) and we lost in the provincial finals this year. Istart weak-side WR for the team, so i guess it makes me stand out a little more 'cause i don't ride the pine. It's a huge commitment, and I love it. I really think being asian and playing football makes me stand out, but I'm just afraid that this might be a really cliche essay topic.
Adcom: "Oh god, ANOTHER 'what football has taught me' essay"

LOL, I'm an Asian that plays football as well. I did the whole "what football has taught me" topic in the short answer. I'd try to go for something a bit different for the actual essay.

well I'm also writing a cliched topic - the taskmaster coach who inspired change. haha I ALSO considerd changing topic, but decided against it - mainly cos I'm too lazy to do another one.

If you think youve written it to an aove average standard, keep it. If you want a knockout essay, you might have to change it - withut having seen your essay, just don't think it wud be possible to write a knockout on a cliched topic.

How hard is it to find something meaningful to write about? If the essay makes it clear that the experience/person you are writing about has seriously impacted your life, you don't need to worry about it being cliche.

Thanks Spanks . . i think i'm going to keep with my previous essay, but integrate something about football in it.
I think my commonapp essay is a very very good respresentation of who I am, and my character really comes through in the essay, no matter how cliche the topic.

I'm not saying you can;t write a very good essay on a cliched topic. I just think, when admissions sees a cliched topic, you lose teh chance to be one of those standout knockout esays.

on the other hand..if your cliched one stands out it could be a standout.

yeah write waht you feel, that willwork out the best.
good luck.

i kinda had a similar situation...i wrote about being an asian cheerleader and what it taught me. i thought it was pretty cliche but everything worked out for me =) so it was fine.
