I have a bit of a problem. When I applied to Princeton SCEA, I asked two teachers to write me letters of recommendation and they gladly did. In fact, one of them tailored her letter to Princeton specifically. Both were submitted online.

Now, I am applying to places Regular Decision. However, apparently the teachers can't edit their letters, even though one specifically mentions Princeton. What should I do?

The teachers are correct … it they submitted their recommendation letter online, they can’t change that online letter. The easiest answer for you for the rest of your applications is to select a new different teacher for future schools that you want to apply. It sounds like you can re-use the other teachers letter for the rest of your applications, and if you need an add’l recommendation for other schools, ask a 3rd teacher, which you can then select for the schools that need 2.

The alternative is to still use that teacher’s recommendation and hope that other schools are too offended that they were not your first choice.

Why would I choose a different teacher? These are two of my favorite teachers and I don’t see why I should sabotge my chances by potentially submitting a worse recommendation letter just due to a problem with the Common Application.

Isn’t there any other way around this? I don’t understand why the schools and Comon Application would have this rigid insistence that the same letter is used for all schools.

You shouldn’t change your teacher! You can make a new version of your Common App and re-add your teacher, OR - use your old common app, and click invite official. Then, just re-add your teacher. If CA gives you any bs, add in your teacher’s middle initial to his/her name so it’s “different.” If the worse comes to worse, have your teacher hand-write the rec and mail it in. Let me know if you have any questions! :)

It depends on whether your teachers uploaded their recommendations via Naviance – if so, she may not be able to change it, but you could “remove” that teacher from all other colleges as a recommender, and then have her mail in a paper recommendation.

If your school does not use Naviance, then it’s probably simpler, as in Post #5
