Change to the Theatre Program admissions policy at James Madison University

The Theatre Program admissions policy at James Madison University has changed.

In the past any student admitted to James Madison University academically could declare the major in the Theatre Concentration. Starting immediately all students must go through and audition/ portfolio review/ interview process and be admitted to the program in order to declare the major.

Students entering this fall (2010) who already declared the Theatre Concentration when they went through orientation will not need to go through the audition process.

Students entering JMU this fall (2010) who did not declare the Theatre Concentration already at orientation, all current students at the JMU in other majors who would like to transfer into the Theatre Program, and students who are applying for admission to JMU for next fall (2011) will be required to go through the audition/ portfolio review/ interview process.

An audition/ interview was already mandatory for the Musical Theatre and the Dance programs. The change is that now an audition/ portfolio review/ interview is also mandatory for the Theatre Program.

oops… while cutting and pasting I posted the same info above twice. Too late for me to go in and edit :)

If a student was interested in, say, physics and theatre, is applying for fall 2011 to JMU, loves both subjects and is not exactly sure what he wants to do in life yet (do any 16 year olds?) what would you recommend in terms of applying?

If you think you would want to have the possibility of starting as a major in the School of Theatre & Dance in the first semester of your freshman year, I would suggest auditioning/ completing the portfolio review/ interview (depending on interests) in January or February.

If admitted you may choose to accept the offer of admissions to the Theatre program or not. You may also want to consider a double major in BA Theatre/ BA Physics.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy does not appear to have any specialized admissions requirements in the catalog. It would be easy to declare physics as your second major at a later date.

There is also a Physic minor offered if you decide you only want to major in the Theatre program, but still want the physics minor.

If you end up wanting to major in Physics but do not want to double major. You could pursue a minor in Theatre. There are no special admissions requirements for the minor.

Lots of options… but more will be available to you as a HS student making a decision of where to attend if you go through the audition process. Otherwise you would need to wait until sometime during your freshman year (or a later date) to audition for the Theatre program, and would likely have difficulty getting into theatre classes in your first semester.

Hope this helps :-)
