Change to the THEATRE Program admissions policy at James Madison University

The THEATRE Program admissions policy at James Madison University has changed.

In the past any student admitted to James Madison University academically could declare the major in the Theatre Concentration. Starting immediately all students must go through and audition/ portfolio review/ interview process and be admitted to the Theatre Program in order to declare the major.

THERE IS NO CHANGE TO THE ADMISSIONS POLICY FOR MUSICAL THEATRE OR DANCE. An audition/ interview was already required for the Musical Theatre and the Dance programs. The change is that now an audition/ portfolio review/ interview is also required for the Theatre Program.

FAQ

How does this impact students auditioning for the Musical Theatre program?

In the past a student who auditioned for the Musical Theatre program and was not admitted, but WAS admitted to JMU could automatically choose to attend JMU as a student in the Theatre Program. This will no longer be the case. Now students who audition for the Musical Theatre Program will be asked on their audition form if they would ALSO like to be considered for the Theatre Program. Only those students who check “yes” on the audition form will be considered for the Theatre Concentration if they are not admitted to the Musical Theatre Program. Admission to both programs is competitive.

How does this impact current JMU students and incoming freshman for the fall of 2010?

Students entering this fall (2010) who already declared the Theatre Concentration when they went through orientation will not need to go through the audition process.

Students entering JMU this fall (2010) who did not declare the Theatre Concentration already at orientation, all current students at the JMU in other majors who would like to transfer into the Theatre Program, and students who are applying for admission to JMU for next fall (2011) will be required to go through the audition/ portfolio review/ interview process.

Hi KatMT- D is scheduled for VTA (Va Theatre Association) MT auditions 29 Oct. I understand these are “practice” auditions but does JMU ever make final decisions there?
Also, as I am in a scheduling frenzy :), how much time should we allow for a “real” MT Saturday audition?
Thanks!!

Hello –
We do not make any decisions based upon the VTA auditions. We have very specific requirements… two sings, a dance, interview (as part of the audition), essay, transcripts, etc… that are more extensive than the VTA requirements, so we do see enough of the students there to evaluate. Also – all students must be accepted into JMU in order to be admitted to the program, so VTA is too early for us to know if a student has been admitted to JMU.

In terms of the auditions on campus in January… it depends on how early the students schedules their audition. The day starts at 9:30am with an information session followed by a dance audition. We begin the singing/ acting/ interview portion of the audition after the dance calls as finished… usually by 11:30am or so. If a student is in one of the first singing/ acting groups, the could be finished as early as 12:30PM. Later groups might not be finished until 4PM. We assign students to groups in the order they sign-up for an audition appointment.

Let me know if you have any other questions :)

Thanks! Just what I needed to know.
