Changes to the AP World History Exam- 2011

Collegeboard has recently published the revised copy to the AP World History Practice exam, here:

[I don’t think I’m doing anything wrong as I’m linking to a public and legitimate website/distributor, which Moderator Trinity states is acceptable].

Looking between the 2008 Audit Practice Exam and the recently released Fall 2011 Practice Exam, it appears that
A) The questions have been reduced to 4 choices
B) The questions require more analysis and critical thinking: it’s not as obvious as remembering a random fact one covered in his or her class.
C) The essays will be the same, but they’ve been quite thematic anyhow.
D) College Board’s got a lot more classy  I like the new and sleek format of the practice exam, and they have explanations too!

Not a very drastic change, but a change regardless. What do you think about it? I personally think it made the exam a bit easier.

Haha looks like the mc is gonna be easier and easier to guess. That means more pressure on the essays.

Native Americans are now referred to as “Amerindians”? That’s just plain offensive to two peoples. I don’t understand why people just try to reinvent wording in “neutral” terms and jam it through the History Texts as PC. (ex. BC to BCE - use the exact same calendar, neutralize the “offensiveness”)

Native Americans have been referred to as Amerindians in last year’s test too.

This doesn’t make previous prep-books obsolete does it :o

What prep books would you recommend?

I’m glad they’ve made the World History exam more “big picture” for it requires one to have a deep understanding of the topic instead of memorizing facts. I’m not looking forward to the essay though, mostly since it (as eagles94 said) will have more pressure put on it. I just hope Princeton Review, Barrons, and other exam prep companies will adhere and release an updated version soon.

I got Barron’s APWH prep book this year; I didn’t know they updated the world history test. Does this make the older prep books obsolete or are they still useful? I have the fourth edition.

I’ll probably still use it for the info. I’m just wondering if the practice tests are still any good.

^Probably not for the multiple choice. I would wait for an updated one.

And that’s so disappointing for me. I took WHAP this year, and I really would have liked to have 4 answer choices for the MC lol

this change represents a general trend lately of dumbing down the AP tests, like they did with Biology. Relying more on themes means not having to really know the facts of history. And it is easy to guess on theme questions because you always know what they want to hear.

Amerindians? You have to be kidding. Political correctness is just getting more absurd every day.

Why does the Collegeboard feel the need to constantly change things? Just leave the test alone. It was fine before.
