So I was deferred from all my early colleges, and I believe that part of the reason was my essay, which was admittedly not as polished as I would have liked. That being said, is it possible for me to rewrite my common app essay for the colleges I'm applying to during regular decision as well as for the colleges I was deferred from, so that they receive my new common app essay as well. The common app site actually states that edits should only be made for grammar/spelling corrections, but I had previously submitted one essay for one of my earlies then submitted an entirely different essay for the other earlies, yet there was no problem...
So yeah I'm kinda worried here, please advise tyvm

As far as I know, and this is based on last year, you will be able to create a third CA essay to send to your RD schools but the new essay cannot be sent to your deferred schools since you already applied there using a different essay. I cannot recall the logistics, but am guessing that a quick Google search should help you.

There is nothing to stop you from submitting a new essay to your deferred schools, but you would need to submit directly to each, not via CA.

That’s completely fine. You can submit one more version of your essay. The reason common app says not to change the essay is they are emphasizing the fact that the essay is supposed to be common, which means you shouldn’t submit a different essay for every school- and they prevent that with the limit of 3 different versions. But changing a “bad” essay to a good one and submitting that to the remaining schools is different, because it is still a common essay, and does not cause any problems- in fact, it fixes many.

From what I’ve read on these boards colleges will only consider changes of record for deferred students - additional grades, new awards, etc. Do essays fall under that? I didn’t think so. I would think you only get one bite at the apple with essays.

Oh, yes, I want to add an edit to my above comment. That would be for the schools you haven’t applied to yet.

Thanks for the info guys!
