Changing major on an open application?

My son already submitted his application to CP SLO. Now he getting excited about another major that wasn’t really on his radar before, but he attended some lectures recently that sparked his interest.

Question is, if he decides he is leaning towards the other major, would it negatively affect admissions to change his application? We see on Cal Poly’s web site that major changes can technically be made to an open application until January: https://www.calpoly.edu/admissions/first-year-student/how-to-apply/making-changes-to-your-application

No, changing a major prior to the January deadline should not affect his admissions but I would do the change sooner, rather than later. SLO has in the past considered alternate majors for some applicants so he could select a new first choice and have his original major as the alternate.

Since they allow until January to make a major change, they are probably not reviewing applicants until after the deadline.
