Changing Major Third Year of College

Hi all! I’m in the first semester of my third year of college. I’m currently projected to graduate May 2023. I am an environmental engineering major, but spent my first year as an English major. I am now considering a major change again, but am not sure if it is worth it. I don’t care for the engineering side of my major (which is the majority of it) at all. I’ve only enjoyed my environmental classes. My health and grades have both declined because of the stress these courses have put me under and my general disinterest in them. I have had to withdraw from courses. This seems to be common for a lot of my peers in engineering. Additionally, I hate college in general and would like to fast track my graduation. My freshman year I was projected to graduate May 2021; of course, this has been delayed. I am considering changing my major to environmental studies with a concentration in geography in planning. This would allow my to graduate next fall (2021), as well as focus more on the content I enjoy. I think the job prospects would still be good with this degree but am unsure. The main thing delaying my graduation with the engineering program is that my university requires 3 co-ops. I also transferred colleges in order to be an engineering major and my current college is more expensive than my first one was, so again, I’m not sure if I should transfer out of engineering. Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

What kind of advice were you hoping for?

From my perspective, there doesn’t seem to be a question or a difficult decision here:

  • You dislike the engineering classes you are taking
  • You know that you enjoy the environmental sciences classes
  • Your grades and health have declined because of your engineering classes
  • You want to get finished, and your engineering classes are delaying you

Changing your major to environmental studies - essentially dropping the engineering portion - would allow you to achieve all of your goals: you’ll have classes you actually enjoy, you’ll be less stressed, and you’ll graduate sooner. What’s the downside?

Your current college may be more expensive than the original one, but can you not transfer back? Even if you can’t, you’d be paying the same amount of money regardless, so why be miserable when you don’t have to be? It’s a sunk cost at this point.

It sounds like changing is the best thing for you in this situation.
