changing major?

Hello everyone! I am just wondering how easy is it to transfer from one school to another? I got accepted to the Swanson School of Engineering, if I want to change my major to one of the majors in the school of art and science, would that be relative easy? When do you think would be the best time to change my major, freshman year? Thank you for any input and happy holiday!

Yes. Do it before the year starts (talk to someone in OAFA probably, since you don’t have an advisor yet). You’re going to switch into A&S as an “undeclared” major since A&S students don’t declare until at least the end of freshman year, if not sophomore year. It should be an easy transition since the requirements to get into SSOE are typically tougher than A&S. But talk to someone ASAP to make the switch.

thank you for your reply and it cleared my confusion a lot! maybe i should email them after the holidays, but do you think it is possible and reasonable for me to stay in swanson for my first year and transfer to arts and science? or would that be a waste of time since the classes are engineering-based?

Depending on what you want to major in within A&S, it may be a waste of time. The first year SSOE curriculum is:

–Engineering (Programming) I&II
–Engineering Physics I&II (no lab)
–Calculus (I, II, III) and/or other math (Linear Algebra/Differential Equations)
–Engineering Chem I&II (only II requires a lab, different from A&S Chem)
–2 electives

Whereas in A&S the courses you take are entirely open and then are A&S courses (i.e. not Engineering based). So yes, it’s better that you switch BEFORE the start of the year, because then you can ensure all the classes you take freshman year will count towards your graduation requirements.

thank you for your advise! it really helps me to sort things out. i think i will stick with engineering major. merry xmas :)
