I got accepted into the school of arts and sciences...since I have applied I have changed my mind to a major in engineering. Can i still pick engineering or am i out of luck?

Hi, i’m at peer advisor at Pitt. Since you are already accepted in Arts & Sciences, you have to stay there for now. But if you are interested in transferring to Swason School of Engineering, Arts & Sciences can prepare you for that.

Make sure that your advisor knows that you are interested in transferring to engineering so that they can enroll you in the right classes when you get here. Before you can even be considered for admission into Swanson, you need to complete a set of courses…such as Chem, Calc, Bio, etc… (I don’t know the entire list). It normally takes a year to complete those first year engineering requirements. After you complete those, you can apply for admission into Swanson. However, you aren’t guarenteed admission into Swanson even after you complete those classes. They have to decide whether to admit you or not. So it’s important to do well! The first year curriculum for engineering is definitely a challenge.

Hope this helps!

PittPeerAdvisor - when do incoming freshman get their first advising/scheduling session? Does it differ if accepted in Honors College (I know there are additional advisors but thinking about the timing). Thx.

Incoming freshmen will meet with their advisor for the first time during their PittStart session. PittStarts differ depending on the school, but as far as Arts & Sciences goes, your PittStart will be in either May, June, July or August.

I’m almost positive that students accepted into the honors college get to come in a few weeks earlier and meet with their advisor and discuss classes. I remember this happening last year…I think it was in March or early April. If you are an honors college student, i’m sure you’d be notified of this. If I can find out a specific day then i’ll post it on here.

PittPeerAdvisor- So if I did take the first year engineering requirements and decided to go on the engineering path could i still get a bachelors degree in 4 years even though i started out “undecided”?

Yes…your advisor will be able to schedule you for the exact same classes as freshmen already in Swanson. Assuming that you do well and pass, you will be on track to graduate in four years. If it takes you two or more years to transfer into Swanson, you may fall behind. That’s why you want to try to apply for admission as early as possible…which will likely be after your first year.

should i say anything about this saturday at the admission day? and to whom?

You won’t be meeting with your academic advisor this saturday, and that would be the person to talk to about your plans. You’ll be able to discuss all of this during your PittStart this summer when you do meet with him or her.

There should be some sort of informational presentation for the School of Arts & Sciences during the day, so it may be a good idea to go to that. Also, see if you’d be able to sit in on the presentation for Swanson. They may make it seem like it’s only for admitted engineering students, but I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to sit in and hear what they have to say.

I received a letter from pitt placing me on the wait list for the school of engineering, the letter also gave me the option of accepting admission to the school of arts and sciences and then transferring after my freshman year. What are the typical chances of being accepted to the school of engineering from the wait list? If I choose to accept admission to the school of arts and sciences how are the freshman engineering classes different?

Wonderwall- How did you recieve the letter? Did you talk to them already about switching into engineering therefore they reviewed you and that how you got it?

NVM i get it- From what i heard you can take all the same engineering classes for Freshman at Arts & Sciences…im just nervous doing that and not being able to get in Sophmore year. Then there would be no way id get bachelors for engineering in 4 years. Thats what im worried about.

Im a little nervous myself Im taking Ap calc and Ap physics now so i feel i should be fine with those classes im just not sure how it works are the classes just taken in a different building with different professors or are they the exact same?

Wonderwalll–I am not certain what you are asking. However, many students go to the next level in college calculus after AP Calc. Some choose to not get credit for AP Physics because it is rare to get a really good HS physics teacher and the college physics is calc based where many of the AP courses are algebra based.

I was wondering what the difference of taking engineering classes in the school of arts and sciences vs. taking them while enrolled in the Swanson school of engineering. The letter I received listed the classes I would be taking as a freshman, which is the freshman engineering curriculum, if i plan to transfer into the school of engineering after 2 semesters. Are they the same classes with the same professors as they would be if I was enrolled in the school of engineering?

If you are accepted into the school Arts and Sciences, but you would like to switch into the business school, is that at all possible?

Arts and science students take the same (calc, physics, chemistry) classes together with the engineering students.

I like hearing that since i want to get into engineering but am in arts & sciences (will be i mean).

Are there any disadvantages that you know of to starting in the school of arts and sciences other than having to reapply to the school of engineering after your freshman year?

For anyone who is in Arts and Sciences but interested in transferring over to engineering- you WILL be taking the same classes as engineering students in Swanson. The only difference is that you will be an Arts and Sciences student among Swanson students who are already admitted. And before you can even be considered for admission in Swanson, you MUST complete the freshman engineering requirements. Here’s a list:
[Freshman Engineering Integrated Curriculum](http://webster.engr.pitt.edu/freshman/academic/ic.html#FreshmanCurriculum)

The only disadvantage to this track is that you aren’t guaranteed admission into Swason, even if you have completed everything they ask for. The requirements are designed to be a challenge, so it’s important you do extremely well in the classes during your first year. If you come out of your freshman year with a strong GPA, you will definitely have a great advantage.

Basically, you aren’t going to be put in watered-down versions of the classes. You’ll be taking the exact same courses that Swanson students are taking, without having the “Swanson student” title just yet.

What happens if one is not admitted into Swanson after freshman year?
