I may change my major during my first year -- possibly from Chemical Sciences to Engineering. How easy is it to change? What kind of process to do I need to go through?

Also, if I were to apply for Berkeley's engineering school directly, how competitive is it?

Switching to the College of Engineering is more of a hassle than switching to other colleges. the earliest you can apply is during your second semester here to get admitted into the college in the first semester of your second year. I think you should be a competitive applicant with a >= 3.7 GPA if you're shooting for EECS/Bioengineering. For any of the other engineering majors, I would guess that the recommended GPA is a tad lower.

I'm thinking of just applying for bioengineering in Nov or whatever (I'm a high school junior right now). The problem is I've only taken a regular biology course and don't plan to take AP bio in my senior year. Will this affect my chances?

It wont affect your chances if you're taking an already heavy courseload, but if you're just not taking ap bio to relax or something, then I would suggest taking it. After all, UCs dont look at your senior grades(well just to check that you maintained a 3.0UW).

As for transferring to EECS...it takes about a 3.5 gpa (emailed to the CoE dean/assistant dean myself just a couple months ago). And that is the competitive GPA. If you've got a 3.6gpa you're pretty much guaranteed. However, you're math grades will need to be good. ie. high english grades + lower math grades = good gpa but not = admission to eecs. bioE is about as competitive as EECS, so I would guess the gpa would be the same
