sorry, i’m always making threads that are really unnecessary but college is really intimidating me ! during soar, could we ask or request to change our majors or must we follow the rule of having completing the first quarter then talking to advisers and stuff?
also i got an e-mail saying to bring

i don’t remember my scores exactly, so should i go to my high school and ask for a transcript request asap? cause soar is on thursday for me and im leaving wednesday night.!

sorry, i’m just getting overloaded with so many things happening in my life right now.

thanks for anyone that could answer these questions for me ;)

The rules are somewhat different for incoming freshmen, so if at all possible change majors your first year, particularly with regards to required classes/college GPAs and whatnot. Go ahead and talk to your college’s advising center as soon as possible. They will likely tell you that you need to put in at least one quarter with your current major. It’s still worth your while. It gets the ball rolling. Be sure to pick up or download the flowcharts*/required class listings for each major. That way you can start considering what classes that your current major requires that your desired major does not.

*One caveat, the order on Cal Poly’s flowcharts is not always to your best advantage. It still gives you a good general idea of /what/ you need to take, even if it doesn’t say /when/ you need to take it.

Hi Jermaphobe! College can be intimidating, but a lot of answers are on the portal and the website and of course phobne calls to the right depart. at CP is helpful. This is also a good place for answers and support.

My son and I already went to SOAR, so hopefully we can help you some. Your grades and tests scores should already be on the portal under admissions and I would hope that you had saved some copies from your applications. I doubt Your high school will not have copies for you (if they are open). You will not need anything official because you already sent all of that information in to CP. They may just want you to have it so they can advise you on specific questions you have. My son didn’t need any sort of paperwork.

From my understanding, you will not be able to change majors at all until you take classes in the major you were accepted under and get good grades. Then there is a procedure for changing majors. Look on the CP website and search the procedure for changing majors. You will most definitley not be able to change your major at SOAR.
Hopefully you will be able to ask someone more about it though.

Have you watched the Polylive videos? They are really helpful!

Best of luck at SOAR and try to relax. there are a lot of people that will help you with your questions. I hope I helped you a little.

Good advice, bjornredtail & momofmv. I think they suggest to bring paperwork to make sure everything has been accounted for. Look in your poly profile to see what has been recorded so far.

mycalpoly portal / registration&enrollment/student course info./view my poly profile

click on two left column links to see outside credits and test results

Good idea to bring as much as you can gather, in case they missed entering something.

Well, even if you know something has been missed, you can’t change your schedule at SOAR. You still have to wait until it is your turn/time slot. However, advisors will be able to help you pick potential classes.

okay thanks guys, i am really stressed about school and the upcoming challenges i have to face, but i think i could handle this! So if classes are chosen for us already, and so on… what do we do @ soar from 8-5? if we can’t choose our schedules, change majors, what did you guys do for the time? thanks

The time slots depends upon your rotation. My son’s time slot is August 17th at 3:00 p.m. I am a bit concerned he will have trouble finding an open class. They gave him a class he already had ad a community college, which he has to drop since you can’t take the same college class twice. He needs one more class otherwise he will only have 10 units. During SOAR, they teach the kids how to add, swap and drop classes so they will be ready to do this during thier time slot. I think the idea of Cal Poly providing the schedule for Freshman is great, but in my son’s case and some other kids, it didn’t work too well, since the admissions office did not have time to update the system with cc class information. They have been swamped! I am keeping positive it will all work out for him, as well as the others that are in a similar situation.

Hi Jermaphobe! Please look back at my post from SOAR insights thread. I posted about SOAR the night we got back. You will meet with your department about expectations and you will hear a presentation about campus safety. Current students will talk with you. You do learn about using the programs PASS and CPReg. You meet with fellow students and you hear from campus officials. It will be sometimes repetitive and not always exciting, but helpful. You will get your schedule, take your campus ID and you can sign up for books from the bookstore. Think of it as another day to be on campus before the BIG DAY when you move-in.
