Changing Majors right after getting admitted.

Hi,

If I were to be admitted (to Tepper), would it be possible to immediately change my pre-declared major and decide to go for CSC?

SCS? Not unless you were accepted there too.
Just wait till you get here and talk to your tepper advisor to find out more information on what you need to do to switch. Don’t worry, you don’t have to race right away for a shot at SCS…

The admissions representative guy at this information session I went to said that CMU’s going to be a lot stricter about major changes in the coming years.

dude, you’re not the first to try to backdoor your way into scs at cmu, or wharton at penn, or pratt at duke, etc…
all the admission officers are aware of this, so I’d recommend just going for your top choice, cuz the backdoor option is probably just as hard, if not harder.

Well said tarheel!

When I say you have a shot, you do. But still, in my opinion and from the last 3 years at CMU, I saw that hard core determination is the key factor in switching majors. Because the process of switching isn’t as simple as undergraduate admission “here’s my report card, my essay and my SATs”.
In the general admission information session, they always say that to discourage vast amount of people to apply for some easy-shot program and then transfer inside.
Think about it, if you were the head of the CS department, would you want to personally review like 500 students every year, on top of advising your own CS students, probably teaching a course and doing student activities/outreach?

TL;DR the admission to the CS program as a prospective student is pretty different than admission as a CMU undergraduate. Granted, I’m sure admission officers can tell if you’re clearly bullsh!ting your way into a school you have no interest in as a way to backdoor into SCS.

I completely agree with @Tarheel714 (sorry I don’t even know how I missed his/her comment!)
It does get annoying when everyone wants to backdoor, but I’m biased a bit because SCS was truly my first choice and I got rejected because my high school stats were pretty bad. So, naturally, for everyone like me, I wanted a second chance. This is why I’m not discouraging those who got into another program at CMU and want to attend and later try again at the school(s) they got rejected from.

EDIT: switching to SCS, to followup on @Tarheel714 's comment, is soooo time consuming (what, like 2 years?), stressful and requires A’s in possibly the hardest classes you’ve seen so far.
