I’ve recently been accepted as a pre math/applied science major and I’m not sure if I should switch to biology. I thought pre math/applied science would be better for a path toward the medical field but I don’t really want to keep studying math, and also I’m not sure if I want to pursue medicine at this point.
Would it be smart to switch to biology? And if I do decide to pursue medicine would I be at a disadvantage? Thank you in advance

@ucbalumnus can you chime in here?
If I remember correctly, it’s not a big deal to change from math to bio or similar at UCLA, but it would be (almost impossible) to switch to - say - eng’g.
As for being premed, and not being sure about med school… If this is the case, then being a bio major isn’t a good risk. We have a glut of bio grads.
It sounds like you’re good/strong in math, but you don’t want to complete all the req’ts of a math major, maybe particularly those upper-division math classes.
Is there some sort of common ground major that includes some math, some sciences, could still be premed, but also could be an employable degree if you didn’t go to med school. (this is another area where @ucbalumnus could help. He also knows a lot about UCLA, while my info is mostly from my old UC days and my nieces/nephews current UC days.
Could you be an econ major that includes math and sciences?
Tell us more about your changing feelings about being premed/med school. Are you leaning away from a medical career completely? Or are you considering some other area in the healthcare world, like becoming a PA or something else?
It’s mainly because I don’t know what I want to do yet. I might want to do biological research outside of the medical career or work with animals or something. And I don’t really know much about the pre math/applied science major itself. I definitely don’t want to complete all the extra math courses but I don’t want to completely forgo a medical career in the future.
if you want to get a decent job in the sciences, the union card is a PhD degree. With a BS degree you’ll have trouble getting hired as a researcher anywhere. Job market is pretty bad for PhDs too (just do a web search on “PhD glut”) and so that means those with merely a BS take the crumbs.
Changing majors within the College of Letters and Science is pretty easy. There is no rush to do it; they are not going to look at your major, see “pre math/applied science major”, and force you to sign up for those classes. Wait until you are a student at UCLA and then change to what you want.
