I’ve committed to Cal Poly a few weeks ago (yay! ) as a business admin major. I’ve been set on majoring in business, but after reading about how business could be a “useless/easy” major, I became skeptical. Business isn’t a technical degree, which is now increasingly bothering me. I’m aware that with a concentration, a business degree is much more valuable. I’m interested in concentrating in information systems, however, industrial engineering also appeals to me. And so does industrial technology… IE is engineering associated with business; I hear lots of IE’s enter the business field and/or get an MBA, which is a nice combo (thus rendering business majors “useless”??). From what I’ve heard, IT is kind of like IE but more business focused and less heavy on maths and sciences.
It would be easier for me to switch into IT since it’s within the same college. I’m not super skilled at maths or sciences (though I can be well off if I apply myself, which I should’ve in calculus ) nor are my stats that high, so I’m not certain that I’ll be able to switch. I’ve heard that IE has a significantly higher acceptance rate compared to other engineering majors though. I am worried that I may fall behind my peers (if I switch to IE) as I have to retake calc, and if I start as a business major, I don’t think I’m required to take Calc I/II/III so I’ll fall even further behind… IT is a safer bet. I have to finish the first quarter before I can switch, but I might not have taken enough classes to see whether I enjoy business or not. But I also want to switch ASAP in fear of further falling behind. College hasn’t even started and I’m stressed… :((
Also, I’m thinking about minoring in computer science and/or psychology. IT is an available minor, too, so if I stick with business, I could minor in IT.
Sorry it’s a lengthy! #:-SAny feedback/advice is much appreciated! Thank you in advance!
