Changing Majors

Hey
So I'll be graduating from my CC this semester and was accepted into FSU for the fall term. When I applied to FSU I just kinda did it to keep my options open, but I didn't really think I would be attending. Also, when I applied I did not really know what I wanted to major in, or do, so I just picked philosophy as my major. However, things have changed and I have decided I do want to attend FSU, but I want to major in Math and possibly in the Math/teach program or have a Math major/CS minor. So, I was hoping someone might be able to help me out and answer a couple of questions I have. First, what do I need to do in order to change my major, and can I change it now? Will I be able to attend FSU in the fall as a math major? Lastly, have you heard anything about how good the FSU math department is on a whole?

Thanks in advance =D

I’m a math and education double-major in the FSU-Teach program, so I can answer any questions you have. Generally, if you want to change your major, you go see the advisor in the department that you want to switch to. What classes you take in the Fall depend on what classes you have taken so far. If you have taken the basic math courses, such as calc I, II, III, and differential equations, then you will ready to start with the upper-level courses, such as linear algebra or intro to advanced math/discrete. If you plan to do FSU-Teach, you should start those classes immediately. As far as the math department goes, it’s not exactly notable (at least in the undergraduate), but then again it’s not horrible, either.

When do you attend orientation? You can change your major then, and meet with an adviser.

My daughter will be starting FSU this summer and wants to change her major to the FSU-Teach Biology major - to Otay57 - what year are you in? Have you done any internships? Anyone else in the FSU-teach program?

She’s attending orientation 05.20 and 05.21 - will she register for both summer and fall at that time? How crazy is it during this time - will she have enough time to spend with an adviser to go over classes, etc? Any words of wisdom ?

My daughter received a phone call about a week ago from a current student @ FSU and she recommended my daughter change her major online asap so that the appropriate adviser meet with her at orientation - just sharing this info should it be helpful.

Not sure you can change your major online but you can change it when you arrive at orientation the first day. There is a group thing for all orientees and parents, and there usually is a table outside for changing her major right at the start of orientation. The academic advising is as a group, and I think she can go to where you need to go.

She will register for summer only but get advising for summer and fall. Fall registration opens up for those who start summer B in July. While she is there for summer B she can sign up for one on one advising if needed.

I think they changed that, as I got one-on-one advising at orientation last year

I attend orientation July 9 =./
Do you think that this will cause problems since it is so close to the start of the semester?

@mabp2014-i have just completed my second year, but i did not begin the fsu-teach program when i started freshman year, although most do. Typically you start in freshman year with Step 1, which involves 2 observations and 3 teaches in an elementary classroom (grades 3-5). The next semester is Step 2, and that involves 1 observation and 3 teaches in a middle school classroom. Field experience at the high school level is not done until the 4th semester, when you take Classroom Interactions. The final internship, called Apprentice Teaching, is completed during the last semester at FSU, where you are placed for 10 weeks in a high school.

At orientation, you only register for summer classes. I believe registration for the Fall re-opens sometime in July.

otay57…thank you for the information. She’s really excited about this program and likes the thought of coming out of FSU with basically 2 degrees for the price of 1 !
