I have been looking on-line through the curriculum for various majors with my son. He wanted to be a Chemistry major but the university would not allow him to be a Chem major and told him to pick another...which he did. They told him he could take Chem courses and if he did weel, than he could switch majors.

However, it appears that from the first quarter, the courses are very specific to his/her declared major. This being the case, it appears that it would very difficult to switch majors once as student begin a course of study. Is this a correct assumption?

When I went to college we had general ed courses the first two years and then took mostly classes specific to our major in the 3 & 4th years...is this still the case at most colleges or is this just the way Drexel handles its curriculum?

Thanks

The only course that every freshman takes that is not dependent on major is English, I believe. Aside from that, introductory classes are often related to your major, like intro bio/chem classes for science majors and intro business classes for business majors.

That being said, it’s not impossible to change majors but if you’re completely changing tracks to something in a different college then you’re going to be further behind than if you’re switching to a related major that shares some of the same pre-requisites. If your son really wants to be a chem major then it would be easier to switch into it from biology or psychology (both in the College of Arts and Sciences) than from sports management. They are completely different fields and the intro classes will be different.

By the way, please try to condense questions onto single threads rather than making a new thread for every topic. University 101 is required by every major but you’re grouped with other students in your major and the course will vary by different colleges (CoAS has a different curriculum/set-up than the Lebow College of Business).

Thanks for the response…sorry for the two posts…we were reviewing the Drexel website…should have waited to post until we had all our questions for the day ;)
