I'm an incoming freshman currently in the college of life and sciences.. My major right now is Biology and I'm doing pre-med. I want to change my major to bioengineering but I don't know whether I should do it now before my orientation date or stick with Biology for a year and transfer into bioeng next year.

Even if I do change it now, I'm not guarenteed in am I?

Why dont you ask your academic advisor…

I don’t meet this academic advisor until Orientation (I don’t think even then) which doesn’t help me right now. If I do decide to change majors I’ve been told that I have to change this before I go there.

If you’re absolutely sure that you want to do bioengineering, then I would try to switch as soon as possible. If you try to switch next year then you need to meet “gateway” requirement courses before you get accepted in. It’s much easier to change now than have to attempt an internal transfer later.

Definitely contact the advisors in the engineering department and see if you can change… the sooner the better.

Dont worry, you can change majors when you get to orientation. On the second day, you sign up on clipboards depending on your majors and the orientation advisors said if you want to change majors, now is the time to do it. So sign up for the clipboard that has your desired major.

I’m guessing that would be within the same school. You wouldn’t have a clipboard for bioengineering at the chemical and life sciences scheduling.

Forget what I said. Ginab591 is right.
I thought you were trying to switch into biochemistry (misread). I would contact your advisor immediately.

I made the exact same switch last year. If you’re sure you want bioengineering, I wouldn’t wait. Bioengineering has a lot of required courses and if you wait a year then you’ll almost definitely need to spend an extra semester or two on campus to complete the degree. I would try to switch before orientation but if they don’t let you do that then its not the end of the world. You can still take the introductory engineering courses, but if they don’t let you transfer into the engineering school then you’ll need to get a permission stamp from the engineering school to take the courses, because they are reserved for engineering students. Then, once you complete the gateway requirements you can apply to the engineering school (if you get good grades you’ll have no trouble getting in). I’m not quite sure who to talk to switch into Engineering before orientation, but if they don’t let you do that then email Michelle French. She’s in charge of student affairs for BioE and is a really nice lady. She can answer all of your questions/take care of permission stamps for you.

Thank you guys so much for the help I really appreciate it. I’m calling admissions tomorrow to get this all figured out.

Okay so I was able to make the switch with no problems!

@shamalong680 - My friend wants to do that switch (bio to biochem). Can she really do the change on orientation day? Her’s is on monday.

As long as biochemistry and biology are in the same college (CLFS), then it’s as simple as writing her name down on the clipboard that has biochemistry on it. The orientation advisors may or may not tell her this when they get there (mine did) so she should ask first if they don’t.
