Congrats! My daughter is graduating from that program in June!
Congrats! That is my daugther’s major and she loves it!
I will say it does depend on department/major as well. The school my kids attend did not have any AP courses either, so they did not have those on their transcripts, so no weighted GPA’s. My son had a very middle of the road SAT (1070). Your son will find the school that is a fit for him and that will celebrate him. But that doesn’t mean Chapman doesn’t do things holistically, it means that in the current applicant pool for your son’s major there were students who were a better fit for what Chapman was looking for this year, that’s all. PLUS I know Chapman has gotten bitten in the rear the last several years by a higher yield so a larger than anticipated freshman class. I would not be surprised if they admit fewer this year. They loaded all freshman dorms with 3 students per room and had to turn away a lot of sophomores and above because they couldn’t house them. Classes were harder to get as well, so bad timing and re-evaluating their admissions/yield strategy likely was at play.
But that doesn’t mean it’s all test scores and GPA’s. My kids are evidence of that, but they weren’t applying for computer science.
It varies year to year somewhat based on admissions and strength of applicants. My daughter got a presidential and it was $24k per year when she was admitted in 2016. My son did not get any merit aid at all due to his very average SAT score. I think the top one last year was $32k per year.
@jss9395, thanks for the reply. Does your daughter like Chapman? My daughter is very excited about the school based on our tour and research, but we’d love to hear any first-hand feedback.
She LOVES it as does my son who is a freshman there. We couldn’t be happier! I am happy to answer any questions…send me a PM!
@jss9395, I have been stalking this feed for a few weeks and reading your comments. My daughter got accepted to Screenwriting yesterday with a Provost scholarship, and she is so excited (and so are we!) I would love to know all about your experiences with your kids. I am new to College Confidential and can’t figure out how to PM on here, but feel free to PM me if you have time. Thanks so much!
I got deferred to RD, applied to Business Administration/Entrepreneurship and second choice as Undeclared. I have been in contact with Chapman since sophomore year… Does anyone know if there’s a better chance of getting in as a deferred applicant than those who just applied RD
@jss395 I’m in the same boat as @cabound2. I’m also a new member and apparently don’t yet have PM capability (haven’t had 15 posts). I suspect that many of us would be really interested in hearing about your kids’ experiences at Chapman as we consider our options. My daughter is an English major who is interested in combining her interest in writing and storytelling with her interest in digital media (video, etc.), and is looking at fields like journalism, or corporate communications and marketing.
Some of our questions: 1) Given that Chapman is outside of LA (but close to Irvine), we are wondering about the availability of quality internships for students? 2) Do you know anything about the Honors program? Pros and Cons? 3) School size: Do kids feel like it’s too small over time or do they feel like they have plenty of academic and social options? 4) Do your kids find the school academically challeging? 5) How is the Greek system? My daughter may be interested in a sorority (I wasn’t in one myself, and candidly, am battling with some negative stereotypes which I’m told are oudated); 5) Lastly, not being from CA, what kind of reputation does the school have? I’m a little concerned that Chapman ranks considerably below other “peer” schools like Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara (in USNews rankings). I’m wondering if the local reputation (i.e., with prospective employers) is one of turning out academically strong students ready for the work force.
Feel free to message me privately or respond publicly. I really appreciate your thoughts!
There might be some students who wait to apply RD because they are above Chapman’s usual criteria and know that they will get in either way, but Chapman doesn’t publish their Common Data Set where you can see how many students they accept ED/EA compared to RD. If you don’t mind me asking, what were your stats?
My stats were below average for Chapman, but I am an international student so they explain some of that. I am taking three AP courses and have extensive ECs. Last year I got all 4s on my AP exams, but I don’t know if they take that into considerations or not.
