CA schools are over-represented. Loyola Marymount, UCSB, Santa Clara, and a number of other CA campuses appear in the top 25 (and land mostly in the top 10). Chapman is ranked #3 in the US. The 'Comfort Index" (weather) factor surely didn't hurt.

Chapman is a jewel. Here is the complete list:

College Rankings 2012: Most Beautiful Schools (Photos) - Newsweek and The Daily Beast

Ah ha! Sending link to the grandparents right NOW!

The fact that Kenyon college isn’t on here is kinda sad…

From the article’s first page, it sounds like the rankings come from the students who go to the schools, i.e. how they ranked the attractiveness of the campus they attend. Chapman students obviously ranked their school very high.

Yes, it’s evidently based on the beauty of the campus, a ‘comfort index’ (weather) and also attractiveness of the student body. An overall ‘beauty’ index, I suppose. Not serious, but then a number of the US News College Rankings are fun and silly. It still indicates that the students are happy with this aspect of the college.

That said, my husband and I were in Old Towne Orange yesterday walking about and it was just about perfect: banners up for the International Food Fair, gorgeous weather, musicians with mandolins, violins and guitars gathering to play on the Circle, Chapman’s campus relaxed and pretty in summer, people cycling by on cruisers, dog-walkers, little galleries, coffee houses and funky vintage shops. It’s all on a small scale, postage stamp sized…but wonderful, just the same.

Dang, I’m so jealous that you’re already there enjoying the vibe. Two weeks from today! S is very excited!

Okay, I’ve been to Pacific Union College. Lovely campus, but the students have blinders on when it comes to rating each other… >_>

It is indeed a jewel! Chapman is a gorgeous school!

The ranking reflected survey data on the attractiveness of students, the campus, the number of sunny days per year, and the area’s comfort index, which measures humidity and afternoon temperatures.

This set of rankings published by Newsweek and based on its and College Prow ‘s data collections on the most physically appealing schools. College Prow ranked the attractiveness of the student body’s, well, bodies. Meanwhile, Newsweek compiled rankings on campuses’ “architectural aesthetics” and factored campuses’ weather conditions (based on reports from Sperling’s Best Places) into their scores. Newsweek and College Prow**) combined their research efforts to determine its list of the 25 most beautiful schools.

Hey, Strange! When this list of colleges came out, I immediately cross checked it with the vast tome of info you sent me on southern CA colleges. We can cross some of these off D2’s list right away, no mater how attractive the campus or student body.

But the pressure’s on YOU! I hope you are packing a lot of spiffy clothes and work out gear into your Chapman duffle bags! Or are you planning to hang out on that beach volley ball court out front?

Hiya shakespeare! I’m afraid I’ve got a lot more hours to put in at the fitness center before I start playing beach volleyball, but I’m definitely getting psyched about Orientation.

Whatever became of that list? How’s it look now?

D2 and I recently visited some other beautiful campuses on our trip through the Midwest, (including cute little Kenyon, btw) but alas, the students were not yet back, so we couldn’t get the complete picture. We will check out some of the SoCal ones you mentioned on our trip to visit D1 in January. Seems like lots of those are near one another.
