I have narrowed down my college choices to Chapman and UC Santa Barbara, and I love both, but I am having trouble picking one. I love the location and atmosphere that Santa Barbara has, but I'm concerned about the size. Chapman has a nice location, but I have heard that Greek life is dominant there and it has a reputation for having the "typical OC" type of student. Please give me suggestions, opinions, comments on what which of these schools I should pick.

What do you plan on majoring in? What are your finances like? What do you want out of your college experience?

UCSB for sure! The academics, in comparison with chapman are way stronger. Its a better school over all even though it may be big you’ll definitely get a better education. Also, chapman is generally known as a rich white girl school for those who couldn’t get into LMU, USD, and USC.

How so? Keep in mind that strong academics is based on the professors who teaches them and the kind of opportunities. Do you know where the Chapman professors come from or the schools where they received their degrees? They’re from such schools like Chapman, Stanford, Harvard, U of Penn, Yale, Berkeley, UCLA, USC, NYU, etc., just to name a few. So are you questioning the academic strength that are being taught by these professors?

Really? That’s stereotyping people. Here’s a cc link of where some of their students have turned down to attend Chapman.

Hi hotcupoftea, Is money an issue? What fits you better? Do you work better in small discussion-based classes, or do you prefer to absorb the facts in larger lecture courses? Larger universities, like the UC’s, tend to have bigger classes and less personal attention, whereas smaller universities, like Chapman, focus on teacher-student interaction. Don’t worry about Greek life. It’s not a requirement to join Greek in any school. It’s up to you. What is your major? DS is in their film program. As an example, the film program is enough to keep many of the film students busy (working on the sets, etc.). You’ll also find some students hold part-time jobs in addition to internships. Therefore some students don’t join because they are simply too busy. As for the “typical OC” type of student, that is stereotyping people. Keep in mind that no matter where you go to school, you’ll find all kinds of people. You get to choose who your friends are. Best of luck in your decision!

Thank you so much. I am planning on majoring in a Global Studies or Peace Studies program depending on which school I attend. Financial issues are important, but I have received a scholarship from Chapman that makes it about the same cost as it would be to attend UCSB.
