Chapman video audition

My daughter has Chapman on her list. We live on the East coast, and this is the single West coast school she has selected for her list.

Today she began filling out their supplement, which directed her to the audition page where we were surprised to see that they have only local auditions. While we would love to fly her to LA (or fly with her to LA), the cost is prohibitive. What we would like to do is to upload a video audition. If she is accepted we would fly her out there to visit, as it would be imperative to see the school first hand.

I am worried that a video audition would be discounted as less serious than an in-person audition. Any thoughts?

Hi

I’m in almost the exact same position. I don’t live in the US and thus sending DVDs to most of my schools is my really my only choice.

This is a great question and I hope someone can answer it.

Yes, you can! Information is here: [Chapman University ? College of Performing Arts Audition/Portfolio Upload](http://web.chapman.edu/CoPAAuditionUpload/)

Best of luck to your daughter, Glass! And to you, JME! Chapman is a gorgeous school in a lovely town, and the department is outstanding. Just saw their production of “Urinetown” last weekend-- it’s top-grade. Easily professional quality, and the connections students forge there are excellent, from what I hear-- there wasn’t a single student in the program who didn’t have a professional credit (from South Coast Rep, Orange County Shakespeare Players, or others…).

Thank you, StrangeBro! It’s good to hear these positive things about Chapman. I guess my question is, will a video audition be seen as a less-serious applicant than someone who flew 3000 miles for an audition?

I can’t speak for Chapman, so this is idle chatter somewhat, but everywhere we talked to that offered video auditions was very nice about it and said that they take them very seriously and kids do get in. These weren’t at the most selective schools - the 15-20%, not the 5-10% acceptance rate programs - so I suppose that factors in. I’d say it’s a good idea to talk them up, maybe see if your D can have a phone chat with the program director or some faculty, try to do everything she can to be “present” for them. I really don’t think people expect kids to make those kinds of trips and take on that kind of expense - that’s why the Unifieds were born!

At the school my D goes to, she could have sent a video, but we could manage an on-campus audition (they don’t travel). She had a school break during Feb at a time they weren’t doing formal auditions, but they were very kind and gave her a private appointment. You might want to think if there is a time she could get out there, like a vacation, maybe she could do an audition in person after all.

Interestingly, the way the calendar works out this year, that long weekend off in our school district IS a weekend they are doing on-campus group auditions. Life can be so random …
