Cheap out of state colleges?

Hey! I'm a kid from Western Kentucky who would like to go out of state for college. I have a 3.5 GPA, 25 ACT, and I plan on being a history major.

If it doesn't hurt too much, I would like some suggestions for out of state schools that are (relatively) cheap. The ideal tuition would be under 20k a year.

I'd like to go to one with Division 1 athletics, okay academics, maybe in a nice, fun town. If it's on the coast that would be a HUGE plus. Oh, and I'd prefer no REALLY conservative schools. Thanks ahead of time.

Oh, and to give you an idea, I am thinking about applying to UNC-Wilmington for now. Any similar schools?

Those are the cheapest ones I could find. You shouldn’t really have any trouble getting in to these. :)

West Virginia University- 13k
East Carolina University- 14k
University of South Florida- 16k
University of Central Florida- 17k
Florida State University- 17k

Thank you for responding Gecko. I do not like the state of West Virginia, so that’s out. East Carolina is a lot like what I am looking for, but I think UNCW looks a little bit more respected. UCF, USF, and FSU look huge. I wish I could get into UMiami. It seems like just what I’m looking for.

Any other suggestions? Schools in California would be cool, too. I was thinking about Long Beach State. Anyone know about it?

Okay, so I have expanded my list:

When you say $20k per year…do you mean for tuition only? or for the total Cost of Attendence (tuition, fees, room, board, books, etc?)

Take CSULB off your list…It’s too late to apply to Cal State Long Beach…Deadline was November 30. http://www.csulb.edu/depts/enrollment/admissions/application_status.html</a></p>

When you say $20k per year…do you mean for tuition only? or for the total Cost of Attendence (tuition, fees, room, board, books, etc?)

I would prefer the school to cost no more than 30,000 annually, for tuition and board. Additional fees are fine.

And drats. :(

What do you want in a school?

You have to be careful not to pick a “cheap school” only to find out that it’s a commuter school where few live on campus or a “suitcase school” where nearly everyone lives with 75 miles and goes home on weekends.

So, what do want in a school? big, small, quiet, rah rah sports, rural, city, big city???

Did you see the list above of OOS COA costs?

I don’t want a commuter campus. I would prefer the school not to have more than 30,000 students. As far as setting goes, it doesn’t matter to me. And like I said above, I would prefer a higher up Division I school.

I saw the list, but I would prefer some info that’s a little more in depth than just pure statistics.

Check out the University of South Carolina. They have a great history program, and they are actively recruiting OOS students. When I applied there a few years ago, they had a program where OOS students who received any kind of scholarship over $500 from the school automatically qualified for in-state tuition. They might still have it, who knows.

I heard they do. Does Florida State have any comparable programs?

SUNY Buffalo is about as cheap as they come for out-of-state students looking for Division I sports (MAC Conference). Amherst, NY isn’t too exciting but it’s one of the safest small cities in the nation. The Allentown district in Buffalo is a lively section of the city and is accessible via SUNY shuttle and metro. Buffalo is also on the coast, sort of. The Lake Erie coast to be precise.

Thanks.

I have a 3.5 GPA, 25 ACT

FSU doesn’t really help OOS kids. FSU’s OOS COA is $38,344.00 http://financialaid.fsu.edu/apply/cost_grad.html</a></p>

U South Carolina requires at least a 27 ACT for any of its scholarships, so historylover wouldn’t get a scholarship nor an in-state tuition break. An OOS student must have an ACT 28 to get a scholarship that also qualifies for the in-state rate. <a href=“Scholarships - Financial Aid and Scholarships | University of South Carolina”>Scholarships - Financial Aid and Scholarships | University of South Carolina;

mom2collegekids has destroyed my dreams. :(

Haha, no, not really. What about Mississippi State and UNCW?

UNCW is not really a big sports school. They are part of the Colonial Athletic Conference.
UNCW does not have football.

I don’t mind that. I’ll make an exception :)

I’m quite the opposite of the kid from Kentucky. I’m a senior this school year, and I have a 2.34 hopefully i’ll get it up by the time i graduate… I want to play lacrosse in college, maybe I don’t have to have such a high GPA, and still be able to play… Any division school works… and something cheap as well… For four years, I don’t mind paying 60-80 K
