Cheaper out of state college and university options

I am looking for some cheaper out of state options for someone from Fl. My criteria is down below
In south or Midwest
Has either a good football or basketball team to watch
Medium-large school in a small town
No big cities
Encounters at least a little snow
Private or public (doesn’t really matter)

Thanks to all who respond!!! I need some more college options that are cheaper tuition for myself and my parents.

I’m not sure you’ll beat in-state rates coupled with Bright Futures but some of these definitely have snow and are relatively inexpensive.

For merit aid you’ll need to take the SAT and/or ACT.

Where in the south has a little snow?

Thanks Erin’s dad!
And most places in the south get at least a little snow. I want a place that has snow, whether a little or a lot.

What I want: big state school with either a good football team or basketball team, a good college town, a school that is not totally based around partying, and good academics

I have a 4.38, and haven’t taken the sat yet. I have been researching school for awhile, but nothing sticks out.

Schools with good football and basketball teams are going to have a large amount of partying. However, even those schools have serious students.

How much will your parents pay each year? You’ll get Bright Futures, likely.

have them run the NPCs on a few schools’ calculators. Few OOS publics give FA. However, some will give good merit scholarships.

Mom2collegekids, I know that every school has partying, but I want a school that doesn’t revolve everything around partying.

Why not go in state, and use the money you save for a January ski trip?

@ brown parent The upstate of SC ,NC , Tennessee and Va all have " a little snow"

What is typical Florida instate tuition ?

I don’t think that there are any accredited schools that “revolve everything around partying”. I’m not sure that I know of any that revolve anything around partying.

What are you interested in studying?

What are your statistics (GPA, SAT/ACT, etc.)?

What can your family afford annually for your college expenses?

University of Iowa

  • Big school
  • Not in a huge city
  • Big college football, wrestling, and other programs
  • Relatively cheap OOS cost ($38,000 R&B/tuition/fees)
  • Some winter weather; 5-10 degrees warmer than the Twin Cities usually

University of Nebraska

  • Big school
  • Not in a huge city
  • Huge college football and other sports programs
  • Relatively cheap OOS cost ($32,844 R&B/tuition/fees)
  • Some winter weather, but not like Minnesota

University of Kansas

  • Good size, not in a huge city though
  • Huge college basketball program
  • Relatively cheap (about $38,000 all-in)
  • Some winter weather, but not like Minnesota

Iowa State University 32K as well.

Consider Clemson University. It’s southern. Great football, basketball and baseball. Snows several times a year. Easily drivable to Tenn, Georgia and NC who get more snow and have skiing, tubing etc. They offer good merit to OOS based on grades .

Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Good football team, they beat Lloyd Carr’s U of M Wolverines a couple af years back; near several ski slopes.

West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. Good football and basketball teams.

Thanks everyone!!! Wow lots of help! Some of these schools I have definitely have looked into but most of them were new to me which is great! I needed a lot more options and that is what I got!

I second App State. It’s in the mountians of NC so you’ll get some snow. The campus is beautiful, and everyone I know who goes there loves it. It can have a bit of a “crunchy granola” feel, but it’s worth a look!

@delanicorn Please ask your parents how much they’ll pay each year. Many FL parents will not pay more for an OOS public than they would for an instate FL with Bright Futures.

It is usually much cheaper to stay instate, but just travel for occasional “snow needs”.

the beauty about FL is that it’s such a long state that if you attend school in another part of the state, it’s totally different atmosphere.

@mom2collegekids I have done extensive research on a lot of the fl colleges, but my guidance counselor thought I should try and expand my horizons to some out of state universities.

Given the low instate tuition at State University System of Florida (12 State Universities), combined with Bright Futures, I’m at a lost as to why our instate student would want to spend upwards of 2 to 3 times instate rates to attend out of state public universities.
