Cheaper school or better school that would be more fun?

Hello! I recently was admitted to 2 schools. I won over 20k a year in merit aid + ~20k a year in need based aid. It does not offer my top major, mathematics, but it offers a major that is in the field I am considering going into, actuarial science. This school is pretty good, but I was also recently admitted at my state university. It is considered better on rankings and offers a math major, but I can’t really afford going there. I got no merit or need based aid, and I am only getting the HOPE scholarship and the pell grant. People always say not to go somewhere because of friends, but UGA (my state school) is where many of the people I know (and are some of my closest friends) are going and there were 0 students from the other school, MSOE, that I would know or even from my state. Any opinions greatly appreciated!

What is “MSOE” ?

@Publisher Milwaukee School of Engineering, exactly why I am questioning going there lmao

Well, if you can’t afford it, how do you plan on attending?

@Eeyore123 Taking private loans of ~15k a year + the max federal loans.

Please don’t plan of graduating with close to 100k in debt. If one of the things you are looking at is Actuarial Science, figure out what your loan payments would be for the next 10 years.

Are any of your friends considering borrowing ~$100k so they can follow you to Milwaukee? I’m betting the answer is no. Go to the school you can afford without loans. You’ll make new friends and can see your current friends during breaks.

Which college is the more expensive one?

Please clarify the net prices:

MSOE is $56.5k, so if you got $20k scholarships and $20k grants, your net price is $16.5k. Correct?

UGA is $27.5k in-state – how much in grants did you get?

The deadline for kennesaw state is June 1st.

1 or 2 years then transfer.

Please don’t take 100K in high interest debt for UG-and take a look at #8; Kennesaw offers many different majors at IS prices.

If not KSU, find another state school close to your home and commute. Transfer to UGA or GT for your last 2 years.

Not quite sure how you and your family can qualify for both Pell grants and $100k in loans over the space of the next four years. That’s a recipe for wrecking your credit for years to come. Give yourself some breathing space and go to community college for a year. I had to actually look up MSOE just to make sure they were accredited. It seems that they are. But, it’s such a narrowly focused degree AND you’d be sacrificing the study of one of your favorite subjects. Math is a great subject.

Can you list out amounts for Hope and Pell Grants for UGA? And are you eligible for the higher level Zell Miller award, or the lower level HOPE?

What is the current percentage of free tuition offered for the lower level HOPE?

No one knows how long this virus will complicate our lives, and it may affect Fall College classes. Do you really want to take out loans and be sitting at home doing college classes online?

It is not fair that you need to factor in the virus, the downturn of the economy, and the possibility of parents losing income/jobs in choosing your college. But this is the reality and we can not know now how any college will work in the coming months.

I would plan to stay in Georgia, but at a more affordable college. Kennesaw State has gained a solid reputation through the years, and it should be easy to at least put in an application.

I would suggest you revisit local public colleges and apply to several that appear to be more affordable than UGA.

Georgia Gwinnett College is newer, and will eventually be the Kennesaw State of the eastern metro area. They are very eager to enroll students.

Agree with the gist of these posts: you need a 3rd option.

MSOE is still too expensive for an actuarial science degree (esp w/ no math option).

You can’t afford UGa.

You can probably afford Kennesaw or a 2+2 CC + U option. You’ve put yourself in a box that doesn’t fit- think outside it!

So I qualify for HOPE, not Zell Miller (they don’t add the half point onto A’s in AP classes rip). KSU and UGA are actually similar costs for me from what I have seen. I got 0 grants from UGA, despite only having less than 40k in income. I got into KSU and it would still cost ~14k a year after 4k in Pell, 5k in HOPE, and 5.5K in federal loans. I applied for scholarships there as well and have won none. I have also got into Southern and Coastal, but those are also too expensive. The actual amount for MSOE was a bit more than 20k per, I rounded down. It was 21k for merit and 22k for need based. The costs of attendance are as follows (THESE ARE BEFORE FEDERAL LOANS): KSU - 18k, MSOE - 12k, UGA - 16k, Georgia Southern - like 30k (no go), Coastal Ga - I can’t find the information and don’t really want to go there. So there is the info of where I am right now.

Also, commuting is sadly not an option. I have to leave the house for college. I wish it weren’t that way, but it is my reality. I may have misspoken in other earlier comments, but the last one is accurate.

MSOE is an excellent undergraduate engineering college.

Yeah, I have heard excellent things to the tune of being like a smaller, more niche (but not as good) version of GT.

Wait. What? Sixteen thousand for UGA before loans is a lot different than full-pay at $27K. Take out the loans. Go to a real university. Move away from home. Give yourself a chance at a broad-based, taxpayer supported education.

Should’ve been more clear in the beginning. UGA offered me no aid, but I was getting state and federal money.
