Cheating

In freshman year, I made the really dumb mistake of cheating. I had a hard time adjusting and my grades were slipping so I got a little desperate. I received 3 detentions and a “warning status” which means if I had another serious infraction that year it could result in suspension. I really turned myself around sophomore year and got my grades back up (without and “assistance”) will this show up on the common app when I go to apply to college?

The Common App asks a couple questions about disciplinary incidents. (Wording may not be exact anymore, but same gist.)

1). "Have you ever been found responsible for a disciplinary violation at any educational institution you have attended from 9th grade (or the international equivalent) forward, whether related to academic misconduct or behavioral misconduct that resulted in your probation, suspension, removal, dismissal, or expulsion from school?”

2). “Have you ever been convicted of a misdemeanor, felony, or other crime?” Yes or no? “[Note that you are not required to answer “yes” to this question, or provide an explanation, if the criminal adjudication or conviction has been expunged, sealed, annulled, pardoned, destroyed, erased, impounded, or otherwise ordered by a court to be kept confidential.]”

Perhaps others can advise you as to whether your infraction falls under “yes” or “no” for #1, but it sounds to me like it was not serious enough to merit mention? (As you were not suspended, expelled, etc.)

@bodangles I don’t think it was. I was just given the warning status plus I’m at my high school on scholarship and it wasn’t taken away or anything. It wasn’t even discussed.

Don’t mention it any where in the Common App. I think you’ll be fine.

Well I disagree with this.

Talk to your GC. If your GC is not going to mention it on the Secondary School Report, you’re fine not to mention it, IMO. However, if he does mention it, and you do not, your application is toast.

It’s unlikely that the GC will mention it, but be proactive and don’t stick your head in the sand. It should also go without saying, don’t cheat.
