Cheating

I bet most of those with negative comments couldnt last 1 week of bct or even regular academy life. Their stupidity makes me sick/angry.

I was surprised about some of the things people have had to say about General Regni's response to the incedent. It's too bad that 4,000+ cadets have to have their privileges restricted because of the dishonorable behavior of a small percentage of 4 digs, but in truth, it's the military. You're a team. In the real world, when a commissioned officer makes a poor decision, it could mean that the rest of his command goes down with him.

It's too bad that a few cadets can tarnish the reputation of the whole, but this doesn't affect my excitement about USAFA. I don't think this incident is representative at all of the majority of cadets who want to lead and serve our country with integrity and honor. It's a good reminder, like RTBdad and G4C said, for all of us 2011ers to make sure we're holding ourselves to the same standard the Academy will, even now before we get there.

There is a saying about the services (which would include their respective academies) that goes something like this:

"The Air Force has (now) 60 years of progress unimpeded by tradition. The Army and Navy have over 200 years of tradition unimpeded by progress."

As a result, the Air Force Academy may be victim to more outside pressure to reflect current PC than the older service academies.

Does anyone know what sport the Athletes are in?

No, and it's kept a secret for a reason.

Those comments on the Gazette board are pretty sad...but this one made me laugh out loud....

"i wonder how many of these anti-academy rants were posted by boys who had to watch their female classmates dating guys from the Academy."

Mwahahaha. :-P

One would have to guess the basketball team for various reasons - least of all the success they are having. Losing freshmen from this past football season may not be seen as such a great loss.

There is a saying about the services (which would include their respective academies) that goes something like this:

"The Air Force has (now) 60 years of progress unimpeded by tradition. The Army and Navy have over 200 years of tradition unimpeded by progress."

Ooh, harsh.

Look at it this way. The very fact that the media finds this newsworthy each and every time they discover the most recent event speaks volumes about the news reporters' world view.

"Wow! Public! Can you imagine an organization in this age of progress not only expecting but requiring its members to be, dare we say it, HONEST!?! How absolutely antiquated. Like discovering that loin-clothed hunter froze in the ice of northern Italy. This is lead-story BIG news."

Volumes.

Well, I certainly take those comments with a grain of salt. But one, I found interesting:

"If the Academy allows them to stay does that mean they do tolerate cheating, lying and stealing?"

Given the honor code, what do you all think about this comment? Especially the 4digs on this board?

I'll add a similar question to those of you who are cadets. Either last year or the year before, there was a very similar cheating problem involving about 40 cadets. What happened to those 40? just wondering, because strangely the press seemed to lose interest after the initial shocking headlines.

Well, it just occurred to me, if the cadets have been asked not to comment about this, then perhaps we should let it lie. I don't want to get them into more trouble!

Sorry, Our internet was out for the weekend...some problem with the ISP in Denver.

I think about half of the cadets in the '04 scandal were given the boot. I'm not sure how many resigned and how many were found innocent.

As far as "tolerating" by not kicking every cheater out (which has not been decided yet), many of us feel that lapses in honor can be used as a learning process. If a cadet makes a mistake, realizes it, repents, and works really hard (i.e. honor probation), then, they can be accepted back. That is why we give some cadets a second chance. This usually only happens with 4 digs and 3 digs. It is thought that if a cadet has lived under the code for a long time, and still breaks it, there is not much chance for rehabilitation. Therefore, 2 digs and firsties usually get the boot.

So, the honor board can give a cadet a second chance, if they feel that the cadet realizes his or her mistake and will not make it again.

Ramius, that really makes sense. After all, you are supposed to be learning. I imagine penalties would get much more severe as you move on/up. I can';t imagine that a firstie wouldn't be immediately expelled if he/she was involved with this.

So to sum up this conversation about cheating...

This "scandal" does not represent the majority of cadets who want to lead with integrity.

The media is having a field day because people don't expect cheating at an Academy (which is a good thing). If it was commonplace, it wouldn't be a story. Realize that the Gazette doesn't necessarily have all its facts straight.

General Regni is handling the situation and all cadets will continue to be held to the standard of excellence that has defined the Academy for over 50 years.

Again, for potential cadets and applicants, realize that this incident in no way is representative of the integrity and pride of the 4,000+ future officers at the Academy.

I think we can abandon this thread now. I agree with AFDAD2010. Let's not give this any more attention than it deserves.

Good write-up redhead. I think you are well on your way to success here. :)

Sorry to kind of bring this thread back to life redhead, but I'd just like to point out that things could always be much worse. A temporary lapse in honor among four degrees isn't nearly as bad as say...felony drug charges. It seems West Point is headed through a tough time as well.

Ok, that's it. Thread re-closed. :)
