A friend of mine was caught plagiarizing. However, the only penalty was that she received a grade of 0 on the assignment. No suspension, etc. A record of the event will be kept in a subject coordinator's file but not on the students transcript/permanent record.

Is it possible that colleges might find out about this when applying? On the common app, when guidance counselors are filling out forms it says "has the applicant ever been found responsible for a disciplinary violation at your school from 9th grade forward, whether related to academic misconduct, that resulted in probation, suspension, removal, dismissal or expulson from your istitution?"

Since this person didn't receive any of the above afformentioned penalties, does this mean that she is "off the hook" so to speak in terms of college applications? Are guidance counselors obligated to put no, even though the counselor may know about the plagiarism? (she's not sure if her counselor knows).

I'm curious as to what might happen to her.

sorry. slight edit. the common app says: "whether related to academic misconduct or behavioral misconduct, that resulted in probation, suspension, removal, dismissal or expulson from your istitution?"

She is off the hook in that she is not asked to mention the penalty. That's why I hate that question. First of all different penalties are given at different schools. You can be suspended or put on probation for very little at some schools. Also most schools don't bother to answer that question anyways. They just send a paragraph about the student to all of the school without answering any of the questions.

The thing is, those teachers, gcs who know what happened may remember this and it may color their impressions of her. Reputation is very important and she has tainted hers.

That does not mean a 100% that she is going to pay for this mistake. It means that she now has a risk factor.

hey guys.. Well I can say I'm one of the role model students at my school, I got accepted to the University of Florida and its engineering program. I got accepted for the fall but might attend in the summer for a program. However, I'm sitting at home on the first day of my five-day suspension because I got caught on my iPhone during an AP exam. I'm very scared my decision from UF will be taken back, I already leased my apartment and everything.

Will anyone give me a word of advice?

Actually, I'm sorry to say, but it really might be. That was pretty stupid of you, but you should call UF and tell them. (At least, imo).

WOW 100, where are your parents? This is serious. They need to be in touch with your high school and find out how this is going to be handled. You could lose your spot.

"both my parents were contacted by my high school and they are being very supportive along with their disappointment. I know I must not contact UF since I'm already jeopardizing my status there. I will disclose any details later on my status."
You need to find out if your school is going to contact UF.

My school is not going to contact UF, they let me down pretty easy. I've been great with them and this is so far the only thing I've ever done wrong. They could have easily kicked me out of my school, but they did not. They were very helpful and supportive, and almost shed as many tears as I did.

"My school is not going to contact UF"

Will the suspension show up on your final transcript?

Most likely it'll show up.

"Most likely it'll show up."

That's the point at which you are going to be in trouble. Didn't you realize that they will see this on your transcript and require an explanation? I'm not sure how you will explain this away.
